Whether hoping to graduate and practice as a school counselor or mental health counselor, counselors will be expected to be able to present and substantiate themselves. You will record yourself in Kaltura presenting a PowerPoint presentation for this assignment. Your recording should be approximately five minutes in duration. For more information on recording a presentation, see Using Kaltura, linked in the Resources. Note: If you require the use of assistive technology or alternative communication methods to participate in these activities, please contact DisabilityServices@Capella.edu to request accommodations.
Presentation Structure

Slide Two
Review the state laws and regulations relating to the practice of counseling for your specialization. These requirements help define the unique aspects of the relationship between counselors and the clients and students served. Describe how your state’s legal standards help guide counselors to establish ethical relationships with clients and students through specific requirements (for example, informed consent, managing boundaries, and payment for services). Include ethical codes and state statutes which need to be considered for guiding the counselor.
Slide Three
Identify any state requirements specific to distance counseling and the impact upon the counseling profession (work with the clients and supervisee).
Slide Four
Describe how to communicate these requirements for diverse populations who may not understand professional jargon with a specific example related to distance counseling.
Slide Five: Case Application # 1
Ethical standards (included in ACA, AMHCA, ASCA, and NBCC ethical codes) help to guide the relationship between counselors and clients and students. Review the case examples below and describe specific ethical standards and any relevant legal standards that guide counselors in your specialization to manage the relationship for the appropriate scenario below:
Mental Health Counseling Learners, address the following: The county mental health services department where you work has initiated a distance counseling option to increase access to residents who live in more rural areas of the county that are underserved. You are being asked to run a virtual support group for new parents. Your director has suggested that you use a live chat at set times to facilitate this group. Explain the challenges you will need to address to establish relationships with group members.
School Counseling learners, address the following: Your school is establishing a new page on the school website to combat cyber-bullying. In addition to educational materials, a staff member proposes that there will be a link to open a chatbox that the school counselors will monitor. You recognize that this unsecured mode of communication will pose many ethical challenges. Explain this to the principal and explain how another option, such as secure email, may be more appropriate.
Slide Six: Case Application # 2

I enjoyed reading your post and thoughts on the Christian biblical narrative. I especially liked your comment about every one of us being Gods child and that God has a plan for each of us. We were created in the image of God and for this reason only have value and dignity. When you think about this, it does truly give comfort and hope that we can live a life that is fulfilling and meaningful, as God would want us to. I came across a quote that I really enjoyed, “a human being’s value and dignity is inherent such that it is something everyone possess by the very nature of what it means to be human. Human beings have intrinsic value and dignity because they are the only creatures that are created in the image of God” (GCU, 2019). Do you believe that the Christian biblical narrative essentially describes the nature of God? Do you think that God would want us to use medical intervention if it was available to us?

Please read and consider the following before entering the quiz area:
A union business representative, Tim, received a phone call from his shop steward, Sam, around 10am one Friday morning in late July. Apparently, Samâs area manager, Mark, assigned work traditionally performed by Samâs trade to two non-union general maintenance workers. (Six months earlier, a similar incident occurred within this school system and Mark assured Tim that misassignments of this tradeâs work would cease and desist. In fact, Mark requested that Tim forward a jurisdictional list so he could identify this type of work and avoid similar issues in the future.) Tim was able to contact Mark by noon and arrange for an onsite meeting at 3pm that same day to discuss the potential grievance at hand. When the three met, Tim explained to Mark that the unloading and staging of finished materials have historically and traditionally been performed by his collective bargaining unitâs craftspeople. Mark said that there was very little work performed by these two maintenance workers and, therefore, no reason to be concerned. Sam expressed his concern that Mark had not fulfilled his promise from six months ago. Although the conversation remained civil, both Tim and Mark stood their ground. Briefly describe how you would help Tim “resolve” this matter utilizing an interest-based bargaining strategy.
My Socialization Paper and Zine Project (3 pages) (10% of grade) (due Tue Week 6): Write a narrative analysis that explains your own development as a social human being; research and study your ‘self’ in this paper. Come up with a title that captures the gist of your overall life story. The goal of the paper is to have you critically and fully weave together and apply the appropriate sociological concepts we covered in our readings to your personal experience during childhood and as an adult who is growing in knowledge and understanding of society and their own life’s purpose or contribution to society. Thus, the topic is: How did you become who you are and how are you currently becoming the kind of ‘self’ and ‘social identity’ you want to be? What social institutions acted as ‘agents of socialization’ shaping who you were back then and which are shaping you now? Explain how they are shaping you.
Your paper should include all of the following sections for consideration of full credit:
Literary works like Frankenstein explore the “human condition” or experiences that humans encounter. The study guides for Frankenstein offer several “Real Life Considerations” meant to help you critically analyze the applications of the work’s themes in today’s world. Now, you will choose one of these topics and explore it using secondary resources to learn more about the novel and its relevant social topics. You might find information about social issues in familiar sources such as magazines, newspapers, or social science journals. Make sure your sources are credible – you do not want a random website or an encyclopedic website such as Wikipedia.2 Your sources will preferably be scholarly ones. Here are some ideas of places where you might find appropriate sources for this assignment:
Your thesis statement and paper must address both the literary qualities and the social issues as you evaluate the novel, Frankenstein. However, keep in mind, your essay does not have to answer ALL of the questions listed under each topic. Only answer the questions you feel are the most relevant to the thesis statement you choose. Develop your essay so it has a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Ensure that each of your claims is supported with valid evidence from the novel, Frankenstein, and at least three other credible external sources.3
Using proper MLA style, insert parenthetical citations and signal phrases for all borrowed information in addition to a Works Cited page for Frankenstein and your chosen external sources.
You have several options for this assignment:
There is an ongoing battle between faith or spirituality and science that has been active even before the time of Mary Shelley. What are some of the dilemmas she addresses that are still important today? What are some of the ethical questions she brings up regarding the scientific definition of life and death? What does she illustrate about the power science has to blur the line between life and death? What is a current news item that is similar to this issue?
Hint: Develop a thesis that answers a question like this one: “How and how well does Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein address ethical issues of science and/or faith for audiences, regardless of when they read the novel?”
Both Frankenstein and Walton are trying to discover something important to them. What parts of their real lives drive them to discovery? Does that drive still exist today? While we’ve mapped the globe, are there still geographical places for people to explore? In science, are people still trying to discover the meaning of life, how to save life, and how to defeat death? What methods do they use? Are there better ways to accomplish these goals than others? What are some of today’s motivations for discovery?
Note: Develop a thesis that answers questions like this one: “How and how well does Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein address human discovery as a theme?”
Reread the paragraph where the creature describes the book from which Felix teaches Safie. It begins: “The book from which Felix instructed Safie was Volney’s Ruins of Empires…”
What are some of the perceptions and prejudices from the book that Felix teaches Safie? How have these perceptions and prejudices changed, if they have, in today’s society? What are some present-day situations and references that may claim a lack of prejudice or an open-mindedness, but, in fact, are still very prejudiced, racist, sexist, etc.? Why do you think these situations still happen? Can anything be done about it?
Hint: Develop a thesis that answers a question like this one: “How and how well does Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein address human prejudice in the world throughout time?”
It could be argued that the creature did not consider itself a monster and didn’t do awful things until people treated him like a monster. What are some real-world instances in which people’s actions could be a reaction to abuse from others? Who do you feel is accountable in these situations? Why?
Hint: Develop a thesis that answers a question like this one: “How and how well does Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein address the effect of peer perceptions on personal development?”
At the end of the book, the creature promises to destroy himself. Is this a justifiable end for him? Could he have been redeemed? Would he have had a place in the world of Shelley’s novel? How could this relate to current-day issues like suicide or the death penalty?
Hint: Develop a thesis that answers a question like this one: “How and how well does Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein address the value of an individual’s life and death?”
The creature argues that had someone properly guided him, he would not have been so wretched. Frankenstein4 argues that the creature was evil to begin with, so it would have been useless to teach him at all. What are some current debates – especially in education – where these kinds of arguments still arise? How much of behavior of you think is based on nature (how a person IS) and how much is based on nurture (what a person LEARNS or EXPERIENCES)? What examples from the present support your opinion? What do you feel is the truth? Why?
Hint: Develop a thesis that answers a question like this one: “How and how well does Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein address existing personality traits versus how a person is taught to act?”
The feminist perspective is often explored in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. How are the women characters treated in the novel? What perceptions of women did Shelley use and comment on? How did she handle the theme of motherhood?
Hint: Develop a thesis that answers a question like this one: “How and how well does Mary Shelley incorporate responses to feminist issues into the novel, Frankenstein?”
