TOPIC CHOICE ONE: Innovative Entrepreneurs – Walker and Ford

Here you will focus on the business approaches of Madame C. J. Walker and Henry Ford. Both developed innovative and successful approaches in a time of rapid economic change. You will compare them in the way they started their respective businesses and the key innovative features that made each successful. One might find virtues, problems, and successes associated with both. You might see elements of each in strategies of later leaders and related issues even today.

LENGTH AND DEVELOPMENT: Each paper in our class is a 5-paragraph essay, plus there is a title page (=cover page) at the start and a Sources list at the end. The body of the paper is to be double-spaced. The body of the paper should be five paragraphs and a total of 500-to-800 words in length. The 500 minimum is firm; you really have not adequately developed the paper if less than that. The 800-word upper limit is really a guideline—ok to go over. Just don’t ramble.

Use ONLY the sources designated (ATTACHED THE SECTION OF THE BOOK FOR SCHULTZ PAGE 396)

  • Be typed, double spaced between lines, using Times New Roman font, Calibri, Arial, or Courier (size 10, 11, or 12), with one-inch margins on all sides. You must have a Sources list at the end; each source listed must also be cited in the body of the paper with an in-text citation.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the Sources page are not included in the required assignment page length.
  • The body of the paper should be five paragraphs and a total of 500-to-800 words in length. The 500 minimum is firm; you really have not adequately developed the paper if less than that. The 800 maximum is a loose guideline. The body of the paper is to be double-spaced. Typically, if you follow these instructions, the body of your paper will be 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 pages in length; add a page for your title page and another for your sources list and that then gets to 4-1/2-to 5-1/2. But the length requirement is evaluated by word count.

The SWS style in-text citations in the body of your paper would look something like these:

(Schultz, 1, p. #).(Bundles, 2).(Gates, 3).(History.com, 4).

The SWS style list of sources at the end of your paper would look something like this, though the order may vary:

mha fp5020 data review project report and presentation

Preparation

This assessment is in two parts:

  • Part 1: Project Report.
    • This report should be succinct, substantive, and written for a hypothetical executive leadership team. It is not a lengthy academic paper.
  • Part 2: Project Report Presentation.
    • This presentation is an overview of the project, also intended for an executive leadership team.
Presentation Tools

You may use Kaltura Media or other technology of your choice for your audio recording.

  • If using Kaltura Media, refer to the Using Kaltura tutorial for directions on recording and uploading your video in the courseroom.

Note: If you require the use of assistive technology or alternative communication methods to participate in this activity, please contact DisabilityServices@capella.edu to request accommodations.

Requirements

Part 1: Project Report

Develop your data review project report. Use the Data Review Project Report Template, linked in the Resources of this unit. This template is different from the Data Review Project Proposal Template used in Assessment 2. Authoritative sources should be integrated into the Evidence-Based Recommendations and Conclusion sections of the report.

Provide a minimum of three visual data summaries (for example, pie chart, graph, spreadsheet, and process map), two evidence-based recommendations from the literature, and one new insight. Place these additions in your document under the headings: Data Display, Recommendations, and Conclusion.

Add, in an appendix, the balanced scorecard table that you have created in Assessment 2.

Note: The requirements outlined below correspond to the first five grading criteria in the scoring guide. Be sure that your project report addresses each point, at a minimum. You may also want to read the Data Review Project Report and Presentation Scoring Guide to better understand how each criterion will be assessed.

  • Align a problem statement, performance indicators, and outcome measures with an organizational strategic need.
    • What additional information would strengthen the alignment and make it more explicit?
  • Summarize the key findings from a review of current and relevant authoritative literature.
    • Be concise and substantive. Provide sufficient information in the summary to adequately cover the selected topic.
    • Consider adding additional best practice sources to your initial review of the current literature.
  • Articulate the value of a project to an organization.
    • Consider a strategic systems perspective when contemplating value to the organization.
    • Express main points, assertions, and conclusions clearly and effectively.
    • Be sure you have evidence to support your conclusions.
  • Analyze performance data and trends.
    • Present your visual data displays, along with a concise analysis.
    • Describe the significant findings, trends, and any new insights evident from the data summaries.
    • Determine if there are any limitations to your findings, obstacles to collection or interpretation of data, or potential for bias.
    • Ensure your data is valid and reliable.
  • Provide evidence-based recommendations, a conclusion for problem resolution, and organizational transformation.
    • Identify a short list of interventions to solve the problem, supported by current (published within the past 3–5 years) authoritative literature.
    • Consider how legal, regulatory, ethical, patient safety, and organizational factors are related to the problem.
    • Make realistic recommendations that are within the organization’s capability. They should not be based upon uncertain funding sources such as government grants, which might be discontinued.
    • Make your recommendations sufficiently compelling to convince the target audience to implement them.
    • Include, more importantly, a clear statement about how the project added value to the organization and aligned with the organization’s strategic direction and goals.
  • Combine clear, coherent, and original writing, in APA style, with relevant and credible evidence from the scholarly and professional literature.
    • Apply correct APA formatting to your source citations.
    • Consider how or why a particular piece of evidence supports your main points, claims, or conclusions.
    • Make sure your supporting evidence is clear and explicit.

PART 2: PROJECT REPORT PRESENTATION

Provide a concise overview of your project in a recorded slide presentation. Use the Data Review Project Report Presentation Template, linked in the Resources of this unit.

Note: The requirements outlined below correspond to the sixth grading criterion in the scoring guide. Be sure your presentation addresses each point, at a minimum. You may also want to read the Data Review Project Report and Presentation Scoring Guide to better understand how the following criterion will be assessed.

  • Present a concise, substantive project overview to decision makers.
    • Be clear and focused on your presentation.
    • Address the anticipated needs and concerns of your audience.
    • Apply best practices to the design and development of your presentation materials.
    • Support your main points, arguments, and conclusions with relevant and credible evidence.
    • Be sure to format citations and references using APA style.

for this exercise we will be using an enigma simulator please follow these steps

For this exercise, we will be using an Enigma Simulator. Please follow these steps:

1. Find the Enigma Simulator at http://enigmaco.de/enigma/enigma.html. You will need to have a Java plugin to run it. Be sure to hit the Reset button on the Enigma machine before encoding or decoding, to ensure that you will have the machine in a known start state.
2. Try encoding a short sentence, e.g., “HOW NOW BROWN COW.” As you type the message, you will see the output of the machine “IIYSAAJTMJEKPU.” Copy the encrypted message to your clipboard (i.e., highlight the encrypted message and hit ctrl c). Next, hit the Reset button on the simulator to get

back to the initial state. Then copy your encrypted message into the simulator’s IN box (i.e., click on the IN box, and then hit ctrl v). Your decrypted message should appear in the OUT box.
3. Now try some more complicated encryption. Again, start by hitting RESET on the simulator. Before typing (or pasting) your message set one or more wheels, and the connections on the plugboard. For example, you can rotate the left-most wheel one notch clockwise. Now, enter your message and copy the output. Reset the machine, make the same initial adjustments to the wheels and plug-board, and copy your encrypted message into the IN box. You should get your original message back in the OUT box.
4. Now, if you have gotten this far, you have mastered the Enigma machine, and you are ready to exchange a message with the class.
5. Again, start by resetting the machine. Then, make the preliminary machine adjustments, noting exactly how you have done it (e.g., second wheel one notch clockwise, top “J” connected to bottom “M” and bottom “M” connected to top “J” on the switchboard). Now, encrypt a short message [minimum 75 words] and note the output. Smaller messages would not get full credit.
6. Post your encrypted message in response to this Conference; be sure to include the initial settings that you used on the machine.

how do the paradigms of great chain of being and essentialism color your thinking

How do the paradigms of “Great Chain of Being” and “Essentialism” color your thinking?

Earlier we used the term Paradigm. Two Paradigms that have a strong role in our culture and affect our assumptions, about people, life, scientific processes and particularly evolution are the paradigms of The Great Chain of Being and Essentialism. It is important for us to be aware of the impact of these paradigms in our perceptions of the world. By becoming aware we are able to begin the process of shifting our paradigm.

Watch this scientist talk about the way that these ideas or ideologies mislead scientists and how the work of science actually helps lead us away from our wrong way of thinking towards newer insights, like the networking imagery discussed in the Ted talk.

Scientist, Ernst Mayr discusses ESSENTIALISM in this video – Link

The “Great Chain of Being” or Scala Naturae, has affected the way we have thought about our relationship with nature, for a very long time. Many early scientists were unable to understand nature because of this notion that all of nature forms a hierarchy with God and the saints and angels followed by mankind at the top of the scale and all the lowly creatures and plants and insects below us.

We understand today that this kind of thinking is backward. It doesn’t have a place in the study of nature.

** Share ways that you know the Great Chain of Being paradigm has affected your thinking. –

What are some assumptions you make about life and other organisms that shows the impact of this view on your worldview?

Then share your answer to the question

– How would you rethink this? If we accept that the Great Chain of Being is a paradigm that interferes with our ability to examine nature effectively as scientists have confirmed for us, how can we change, or shift our paradigm?

for ex. -Germs are low on the scale according to the Great Chain of Being Paradigm but in fact, we have learned that they are very powerful they have wiped out populations! So we now see how not focussing on the power of the”lowly” germ would interfere with our true understanding of the causes of illnesses. Do not reuse this example. Find your own example of how to shift this paradigm.

think about Essentialism define it and then give an example of how it colors your thinking. It is important to understand the impact of essentialism because it interferes in our understanding of evolution.

We have the misconception that evolution happens for a reason and is headed towards the best form or towards a goal, and this simply is not so.

So What are some assumptions you make about life and other organisms that shows the impact of this view on your worldview? How would you rethink this? If we accept that the idea of essentialism is a paradigm that interferes with our ability to examine nature effectively as scientists have confirmed for us, how can we change, or shift our paradigm? we may think that we were meant to look as we do today as homo sapiens, but when we study the fossil record we see that there were environmental conditions that affected how organisms survived and which features hung on and which changed.

And environmental conditions are changing all the time.

There is no end to evolution there is always more change.

We are not the final goal. It is random there is no goal.
