Reading question 3: Concluding The Prince chapter 18 to finish
Format: two single-spaced, type-written paragraphs
Machiavelli believes that rulers should have “character,†and by this he means that they should be wise, shrewd and resolute. But Machiavelli also knows that at the end of the day, their power is limited. In particular, leaders must be acutely aware of context and circumstance. When they are vigilant and perceptive, and when they have a grasp of the limitations of their power, they can adapt their methods accordingly.
Your task in this assignment is to discuss some of the situations Machiavelli records in which leaders’ or rulers’ powers of observation allowed them to deal effectively with adversity, and also those situations in which rulers’ powers failed them. Be sure to use many example from the text and cite them with page numbers.

Patriarchy and Women’s Voices
Patriarchy has been a consistent feature of all civilizations. In recent decades, it has been a subject of intense interest to historians operating within local, national, and global contexts alike. They have sought to uncover how patriarchy emerged and changed over time; how it was expressed and experienced; what mix of opportunities and limitations it has afforded to women; and how different cultural traditions defined appropriate gender roles and gender identities, both feminine and masculine. But also of interest was the issue of pushback. To what extent were some women, at least, able to resist the oppressive features of patriarchy, to take advantage of its paternalistic dimensions, and to occupy nontraditional roles in their societies?
In exploring such questions, historians face a major problem: the scarcity of sources written by women themselves, especially in the pre-modern era. Furthermore, most of the female-authored sources we do have derive from elite women. As a result, scholars must sometimes make careful use of documents written by men, often “reading between the lines†to discern the perspectives of women. The documents and images that follow explore various expressions of patriarchy and the women’s voices that emerged within them in several of the second-wave civilizations.
I believe you can only use the links I have provided for the writing! It says the length requirement 3-5 pages. I am perfectly fine with it just being 3 pages. It is due at 11:59 P.M. ET, today, Sunday Feb. 18th.
DISCUSSION WRITING PROMPT
– I have uploaded the 4 figures below, and discuss how sociological analysis approaches and defines social life by reviewing the Tables and Figures of Application #1.
– Your discussion should have 4 entries (one for each graphic) and two answers for each graphic.
Questions:
1. What SOCIAL LIFE does each graphic define as society? WHAT IS THE SOCIETY BEING STUDIED?
2. What are the people doing together? What are they refusing to do together?
In your discussion, remember that sociology does not study individuals — we study society such as groups, institutions (schools, school districts, nations), what we term “societies”. As an example, when reviewing graduation rates, the SOCIAL LIFE is education. People are graduating together and the institution is refusing to graduate all of the students. When we see a group graduate at 60% that means 40% is unable to graduate — we never assign cause (blame) to the group. Instead, assign cause to the institution — the school refuses to graduate 40% because the school graduates 60% of the students.
As you review the Figures, remember to only discuss the facts of the Figure — do not attempt to explain why the covariation exists; only describe the SOCIAL LIFE and WHAT the people/institutions are doing together and refusing to do together.
