  1. Prepare an individual report demonstrating that you a) understand the key ideas presented in the assigned and recommended readings for Week 1 and b) can analyze critically the extent to which they are applicable in your current workplace. Your report should be 800-1000 words and must cite supporting evidence from the readings (or the Week 1 discussion). Your report should be double-spaced and use APA format. The title page, reference list, and any appendices are not included in this suggested word count. You do not need to include an abstract.
  2. The questions your report must address are: What business model does your company use? What is your organization’s vision and mission? What objective evidence is there that your organization’s vision, mission, and objectives is helping it gain a sustainable competitive advantage. Only briefly touch on what objective evidence, using the Three Tests of a Winning Strategy, is there that your organization’s vision, mission, and objectives support its strategy? (We will address the three tests in more detail later) Be sure to introduce your argument, explain your understanding of key terms, present your reasoning, and include independently verifiable supporting evidence.

Writing Assignments

Each unit examination includes a written component. The writing assignments give students the opportunity to demonstrate a level

of subject mastery beyond the objective unit examinations, which re ects his/her ability to analyze, synthesize, evaluate and apply his/ her knowledge.

Writing assignments are judged on the quality of the response. Word count is NOT one of the criteria that is used in assigning points to writing assignments. However, students who are successful in earning the maximum number of points tend to submit writing assignments that are 400-500 words (1-2 pages) per question.

Plagiarism

All work must be free of any form of plagiarism. Put written answers into your own words. Do not simply cut and paste your answers from the Internet and do not copy your answers from the textbook.

Plagiarism consists of taking and using the ideas, writings or inventions of another, without giving credit to that person and presenting it as one’s own. This is an offense that the university takes very seriously. An example of a correctly prepared written response may be found by visiting the Coast Connection student portal. You can nd this in the portal by clicking on Student Resources and thenWriting Basics.

Citation Styles

The majority of your response should be your own original writing based on what you have learned from the textbook. However, students may also use outside materials if applicable. Be sure to provide a citation and a reference for any materials used, including the required textbook. The following points are designed to help you understand how to provide proper citations and references for your work:

•Sources are listed in two places.

The first, a citation, is briefly listed within your answer. This includes identifying information that directs the reader to your list of references at the end of your writing assignment.

The second, a reference, is at the end of your work in the list of references section.

All sources cited should follow APA style and provide enough identifying information so that the reader can access the original material.

WEEK 6 READING JOURNAL: COLLABORATION & COLLECTIVITY

Total word count at least 500, each Entry need to write at least 250 words.

Please read and respond to the following:

Entry 1: “Nongkrong and Nonproductive Time in Yogyakarta’s Contemporary Arts” by Sonja Dahl (Links to an external site.)

Entry 2: “Commentary: Project Row Houses: Arts, Culture, and Collective Creative Action,” (Links to an external site.) by Eureka Gilkey

Please also look over the website for Project Row Houses (Links to an external site.), to give context for Eureka Gilkey’s article

Writing requirement:

The Reading Journal (RJ) assignments are written responses to each assigned reading or video and will generally be due every Monday at 2:00pm (see the Modules section of Canvas to check due dates each week). A reading journal is not your first impression about the text, nor a summary of its content. It is a layout of your experience reading the text and your personal reactions to and analysis of it. These assignments require you to use critical thinking and analysis and to draw connections between your own ideas and those of the authors. For example: were you surprised at how the writer described their viewpoints? Does the writer give you a new way of thinking about that topic? Was something shocking in the reading/video, or did it make you laugh – why? Does it connect to things you’ve heard in this class or other classes, or to other ideas you had? Does it help you think about art in a different way? What questions or confusions do you have about the topics presented? Be specific!!!

The Reading journal functions as proof of your engagement with and analysis of each reading. If you just summarize some key points of the text or tell me what you liked or disliked you have given insufficient proof of your engagement with the content and will be marked down. So, do not summarize what happened in the reading; tell me what happened inside of your head when you read the text. Importantly, you must be specific about what ideas or sections of the reading you are responding to. Though I don’t want a summary, I do want specific references to content in the reading so that I know you have actually read and engaged with it. Remember to always ground your analysis in relation to the actual content of the reading/video.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO PROPERLY QUOTE AND ATTRIBUTE (NAME) ANYONE ELSE’S WORDS IF YOU WISH TO REFER TO THEM THROUGH EITHER DIRECT QUOTES OR PARAPHRASE IN YOUR WRITING (more information about the consequences of plagiarism are below in the Academic Misconduct / Plagiarism Policy section).

Each of the readings and videos that are assigned weekly requires a single journal entry, clearly titled with the name of the article. Most weeks there are more than one readings/videos assigned, so please remember to write a separate response to each (separate them in one document by the article titles, or submit them as individual documents). Each journal entry should be at least 250 words in length, which works out to about half a page long (1.15 spacing).

Turn in your journal as a digital document (doc, docx, or pdf only) by uploading it to the assignments or weekly modules sections in Canvas before 2:00pm every Monday.

Here are some suggestions about how to write your journal if you need guidance (You are welcome to see Sonja during office hours if you have more questions or confusions about the Reading Journal expectations):

  1. Read through the assigned reading (or watch the assigned video) to gain an overall understanding of the material.
    2. Jot down your thoughts while, and just after, you read or view. Mark passages that stood out to you.
  2. Go back to your notes and try to make them full sentences if they are not already.
    4. While reading your notes consider your general impressions and then go back to those parts of the text or video that require more specific observations and analysis. You might use the following questions as a guideline (you do not have to answer them specifically; they are merely meant to help you focus):
  • What are your overall impressions of the reading or video?
  • What particular passages or details stand out to you? Why do you think they might be important?
  • How does this reading/video relate to the themes we have been discussing in class so far? The themes of other sources? The themes of the course as a whole?
  • How might your personal experiences or background relate to the reading/video?
  • What questions do you have about the reading/video? What passages or ideas were difficult to understand?

ewrt 1a weekly discussion 6 one original post and five reflection on others posts

One original post

Please create an original post that is ONE solid paragraph, with a clear topic sentence, at least three body sentences, and one or two concluding sentences. Remember that we are practicing paragraph structure as much as we can in this class! Also be sure to look at your own writing for any comma errors. Your weekly discussion grade will now include weight on comma usage, in addition to paragraph structure.

The prompt for the paragraph is: Tell us about the first book you selected and tell us (1) why did you select this book; (2) how is the reading going so far ; and (3) what do you think of the book? Conclude with some general observation about what you expect from this book.

To earn full points, you must reply to four other students, writing at least three-sentence replies (your replies don’t need to be complete paragraphs). Also be sure to proofread your work for typos, grammar, and spelling.

I will upload the book below.

If you have any question, please feel free to ask me.

Here are two examples:

1. The second book that I chose for the final presentation was Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds. I chose this book because it was verbally recommended by Alex during the first day of class. I have already finished reading this book, and I cannot agree more with Alex’s glowing recommendation! This book discussed the ramifications of Will’s brother’s death and the rules that he must follow to avenge his brother. Every page in Reynolds’s book is formatted differently, with sporadic spacing, misaligned sentences, yet the general flow of the novel is still coherent, almost poetic in nature. I think this book beautifully portrayed in the inner workings of Will’s mind, allowing us the reader to delve into his psyche. It allows us to discover what drives his Id, what stops his Ego, and what enables his Superego. His confrontations with various people he hallucinates in his mind show us the internal struggle he has with following the rules that he knows he must follow. I definitely recommend that everyone should read this book because of the unique writing style and formatting of each page, as well as the beautifully written internalizations of the main character.

2. The online reviews guided me to select Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert as my second book for this class. I just started reading it. I was afraid that it will be another ‘influential’ book telling people how to find happiness waking up at 5 am every day, exercising, and disciplining our minds. The book appears to be focusing on our fear, the feeling which limits and makes life boring. I agree with the author, fear is monotonous and uninteresting. Life without limitation and worrying is more exciting, moreover, courage might lead to unforgettable memories and occasions. I like the beginning of this creation but I can not recommend it before I’m done reading it. Books about happiness and finding meaning became lately very popular. Unfortunately, only some of them have the hidden treasure inside. In my opinion, most of modern famous books make readers more depressed. We read the rules in the book and try to change ourselves to become “successful”. But what does it mean successful? Most of the time books focus on money and position but is that really the meaning of life? Furthermore, they create endless blame. We focus too much on the principles instead of acceptance. It’s important to improve and grow but start with accepting yourself and stop blaming yourself for not being perfect. More than half of the book is still waiting for me to find out if this book also has a hidden gem.

Five Reflection On Others Posts:

Write one paragraph for each reflection, there are five reflection in total

writing requirment

1. Each post MUST BE three or more sentences. This includes your posts in response to other student posts.

2. Each post must be detailed. It is not enough to simply write, “I agree with you” or “I like your idea.” You must say WHY you agree or like someone’s ideas.

3. Write in complete, standard English sentences. Do not “text.” Poorly written posts will not be considered for a grade.

4. If you disagree with someone’s post, politely do so. Explain why you disagree with facts and details.

5. If you agree with someone, build on the ideas.

6. You can reply to someone who had replied to your original post; this will count as another of your required postings for the assignment.

7. Be kind, respectful, and curious toward other students.

8. The instructor reserves the right to delete any post that is offensive, intolerant, or not sufficiently academic for a college-level course.

Please reapply these four reflection:

example of the reapply:

“Hi Kevin,

Thanks for sharing the reflection on Long Way Down. I found that this book is really interesting only through words since you mentioned that the author has a unique writing style- sporadic spacing and misaligned sentences. However, readers can still understand his words without any confusion. I am impressed by the author’s talent and writing skills. Besides, I also like the part in which you say that the book beautifully portrayed the inner mind of Will so that readers can know about this character better and deeper. It is always great to try to read different types of writing because you never know how wonderful it is after you read it. Lastly, I am happy that you enjoy reading this book as well, and you also learn a lot from Long Way Down.”

example of the reapply:

“Hi Jagoda,

It’s great to hear that you’re liking this book so far. I can understand that sometimes it can be hard finding value in books that try to dictate how we should deal with happiness, fear and or doubt. But I believe that life is composed of all three things and it’s necessity is pertinent to living a well-balanced and meaningful life. Having no fears or doubts will ruin life’s ability to throw new challenges at us because it’s what keeps us interested. but I’m glad this work is trying to steer away from this common tactic. I hope you enjoy reading this book further. “

3. Yu Tsen Lin;

“The second book that I decided to read for the final presentation is Thi Bui’s The Best We Could Do. Thanks to classmates’ sharings, I have a further understanding of some books they chose, and I also search every book on the Internet to figure out which book I should read next. Among many great books, The Best We Could Do caught my attention the most because this is a graphic memoir, a genre of book that I always want to try reading it. From my perspective, I think the author is intelligent as she utilizes vivid illustrations with concise words to express her thoughts, emotions, and situations more concretely. Making readers comprehend the story better, and sparking readers’ interest to finish reading the book, I am no exception. The reason why Thi writes this book is that she wants to be more emotionally close to her parents. Thus, she begins digging deeper into her family history and asks her parents about their previous lives in Vietnam. Through her parents’ words, she remembers that there’s a difficult time when her parents take them to flee from Vietnam to the United States. In order to provide Bui and her siblings a better life, they came to America as refugees in the 1970s. As reading this plot along with the realistic images, I burst into tears. Their life of being an immigrant is not easy, especially people regard them as refugees, yet Bui’s parents still determine to come to the States for giving their children a stable life and a bright future. Thus, I am touched by her parents; meanwhile, I once again realize my parents have also done a lot for me, and I should always be grateful to them. Bui’s life as a refugee is not a unique one, but the way she writes her own story is honest and stunning. Resonated with today’s global refugee crisis, I think people should consider what we could to do for this issue, and help them as much as we can.”

example of the reapply:

“Hi Lin

Thank you for sharing your reflection on The Best We Could Do. This is the book I chose for my pervious reading. I also enjoyed reading this book because of the content inside, it contain lots of graphic and little words or sentences, which makes the messages in the book to be easier to understand and create emotion connection while reading with graphics and texts. I agree with you that we should care more about refugee issues but this problem mostly related to government power and politics, and the government will only make policies that benefit that country, so it is difficult to improve the problem in short time, but as an individual, we can donate money to organizations that are helping refugee. “

4. Michelle Koesmono:

“For the fiction section, I chose to read The Book of Unknown Americans, by Cristina Henriquez. I selected this book because it was recommended to me by a friend. It’s been a hectic week for me so I’ve only started reading the first few bits of it, but I am already hooked. What fascinated me was that the author didn’t write in chapters, she wrote through the different characters’ point of views. This style contributed to the depth of the author’s writing, conveying equal voice to the narrative. From the name of the characters, they are recognized as Mexicans. The book portrays the journey of a Mexican family moving across the border to start a new life. As its title emphasizes, the book reveals the family’s individual accounts on living as ‘Unknown Americans’. As far as page sixty-one, the book hasn’t disappointed me yet. I look forward to finishing it. “

example of the reapply:

“Hi Michelle,

I also chose this book for my first reading assignment. The way how the author wrote through the different characters’ point of view also fascinated me. Told through different voices and perspectives, this book examines the encounters of Hispanic immigrants to the US. I could see and feel their challenges of being immigrants and their hesitations as they found out about the new culture from the US. I hope you learn something from this book. Thank you for sharing!”

5. Jacquelyn Natasha:

“I chose to read The Best We Could Do by Thi Bui as my second book assignment. I am not the type to read books, but graphic memoir interested me. By looking at the images, I can get a sense of what is happening, especially as people who turned off books. The Best We Could Do is a timely story about families and outcasts in America. It investigates movement and all the emotions and issues encompassing this circumstance, and the impacts it has on people who are displaced. I have read through four chapters so far and cannot wait to finish the book. I love how the creator used a personal story to exhibit the distinction that shaped her family. Although individual experiences, it addresses various and relatable universal struggles, own failings, and the significance of identity. I hope this book inspires empathy between ages and invites us to listen deeply to each other’s stories.”
