This first activity asks you to demonstrate, explain and refine your ability to write research questions. This activity asks you to pick 1 social issues and carry that one issue through the entire exercise. This activity also asks that you propose different ways to think about how to research a particular social issue. Please make sure to answer each portion of the essay prompt. Even though these are your ideas and thoughts, please limit the use of the first person. Write from the 3^rd person as much as possible.

The written length of the activity should be a minimum of 3 pages and maximum of 5 pages. However, please note that 3 pages does not allow sufficient space to fully answer each question. 12 inch font; double space; APA format

Part 1 (25 points)

Pick a social issue about which you think research is needed. Draft one research question about this issue. Evaluate it in terms of the three criteria for good research questions. In what ways does the question meet the criteria? In what ways does it not? How may the question become problematic when used in research if it does not meet the criteria?

Part 2 (25 points)

Next, identify concepts that are relevant to your research question. Why did you select these concepts? In other words, why do they make the best sense in terms of your research question?

Part 3 (25 points)

Now formulate three related hypotheses. Which are the independent and which are the dependent variables in these hypotheses? Why did you select these hypotheses? What was the reasoning? What theories, ideas, experiences or other information helped guide you to selecting the hypotheses? Evaluate the sources of information you relied upon to create the hypotheses. Which sources of information may be more valid than others? (rely on my first lecture—this does require you to consult scientific literature to situate your problem)

Part 4 (12.5 points)

Next, consider your research question. Would you prefer an inductive approach or a deductive approach? Explain your preference. What would be the advantages and disadvantages of each approach in relation to your question?

Part 5 (12.5 points)

Finally, in considering your research question, what may be some potential ethical issues that actual research of the topic may encounter? How would you propose to overcome those problems?

Part 1 (15 points)

Introduce your research question and contextualize it in the research literature. This will require you to look for at least 1 peer reviewed journal article that discusses the social problem you identified and provide a little more on the history of how this problem has been approached in the past. (2-3 paragraphs; be sure to write in a sociological way)

Part 2 (25 points)

For your research question, identify the concepts that you will need to conceptualize and operationalize. For each concept, go through the process of conceptualization, nominal definition, operational definition and summarize 1-2 ideas you have for how this concept would be measured.

Part 3 (25 points)

Select 1 hypothesis from the first application activity and complete the same process as in part 2.

Part 4 (25 points)

As your text and lectures have noted, some concepts are easy to define and others are more challenging. Discuss the challenges you experienced in selecting an operational definition and them how this carried into your deliberations about appropriate measurement. (3-4 paragraphs; use the sociological language)

Conclusion (5 points)

Summarize what your paper accomplished.

For this assignment, you are going to explore character development in role. You are also going to experience the effect of spacing, arrangement, positioning, etc. This requires you to take some of the concepts from the previous module (how the illustrator communicates through visuals and media) and apply it in a different way. For this task, you’ll embody a scene. Just like a scene of a graphic novel, you can communicate emotion and story through body placement, expression, background, color, props, etc…

Choose one book from the three you are required to choose from this week (Drowned City, Yummy, Or The Hate U Give).

1. Select the most important or your favorite scene/image (or page if from the novel) from one of the books presented this week. Just pick one.
2. Recruit some friends, family, colleagues to help you create a tableau, or frozen scene, to create an embodied “illustration.” (you must have their permission to post an image to our discussion board). If you can’t find people to help, you could have someone take a pic of only you in the scene.
3. Illustrate the scene using your body. In other words, think about how you can situate your body to “act out” the scene. Freeze into position. That’s the tableau.
4. Consider body position, basic props, expressions, setting
5. Have someone take a photograph of the tableau.
6. Post the picture of the tableau on the discussion board. NO CREDIT for anything computer generated!!
7. Submission
   • Post picture (embedded not attached since everyone needs to see it)
   • Include the title of your book and the page number
   • Give your scene a title too- creative and original
   • Discuss your tableaux. What did you notice when you assumed the role of a character? What new insights or appreciation did you gain? Did you understand the plot differently? How did the author’s language help you create the scene?
   • Add your final thoughts about the book. What did you think?

Personality disorders can arise through trauma, and they often carry added stigma. In this Discussion, you analyze a case study focused on a personality disorder while also reflecting on how power, privilege, and stigma affect such diagnoses.

To prepare: Review the case provided by your instructor for this week’s Discussion and consider your differential diagnostic process for them. Be sure to consider any past diagnoses and what influence those might have on their current diagnosis and needs.
