Response Papers: They should be around 2-3 pages in length. These responses will be due after the lecture concluding the text and will be evaluated as an exercise in close reading. Each response paper should accomplish the following three things:

  • Describe what is literally happening in the chosen passage (literal level).
  • Analyze the passage for the literary meaning; this means paying close attention to language and imagery (literary level).
  • Connect the part to the whole: how does the selected passage relate to a thematic recurrence in the work? Why is the selected passage significant to our understanding of the larger work?
  • MLA format: double spaced, 12 font times roman, include passage at top of your response
  • The Stages of Close-Reading

    • PASSAGE TO ANALYZE:
    • ” She was irritated by an ill-served dish or by a half-open door; bewailed the velvets she had not, the happiness she had missed, her too exalted dreams, her narrow home. What exasperated her was that Charles did not seem to notice her anguish. His conviction that he was making her happy seemed to her an imbecile insult, and his sureness on this point ingratitude. For whose sake, then was she virtuous? Was it not for him, the obstacle to all felicity, the cause of all misery, and, as it were, the sharp clasp of that complex strap that bucked her in on all sides. On him alone, then, she concentrated all the various hatreds that resulted from her boredom, and every effort to diminish only augmented it; for this useless trouble was added to the other reasons for despair, and contributed still more to the separation between them. Her own gentleness to herself made her rebel against him. Domestic mediocrity drove her to lewd fancies, marriage tenderness to adulterous desires. She would have liked Charles to beat her, that she might have a better right to hate him, to revenge herself upon him. She was surprised sometimes at the atrocious conjectures that came into her thoughts, and she had to go on smiling, to hear repeated to her at all hours that she was happy, to pretend to be happy, to let it be believed.Yet she had loathing of this hypocrisy. She was seized with the temptation to flee somewhere with Leon to try a new life; but at once a vague chasm full of darkness opened within her soul.”use this link and spark notes to find more information on the meaning https://prezi.com/jtms_dognfs7/key-passage-in-mada…

First–download the attached document. Use it for your responses.

Second, watch “A New Adam.” I encourage you to watch the whole six part series when you have time, but for now, just watch “A New Adam.”

The American story has many facets, including the story of “us in relationship with God,” says religion professor Stephen Prothero at the beginning of this episode. At the end of the episode, he compares the American story to the Exodus story in the Bible.

Be sure to answer all parts of the question, quoting passages from various passages of the film in your response. Be sure to demonstrate you watched and understood the various religious milestones discussed in this first episode. Cite your quotes appropriately. Include a Works Cited and use https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/09/ in order to craft a proper MLA citation of the film. Do remember you viewed the documentary not with a film but on the web.

Use paragraphs, good grammar, quote and cite from the film, and most of all, demonstrate that you watched the entire documentary (300 words).

Questions to Answer

Why do you think the Puritans saw themselves as a New American Adam and Eve – a new people with a new identity?

What connections are there between America’s religious heritage and America’s democracy and freedom from England?

Finally, close with your comments on the documentary. What did you think about the first part of this series (which deals with the time period we have been discussing in Chapter One of this class)? Identify one thing you already knew, and then identify several things from different points in the film that you learned.

Submit the assignment through this dropbox.

This activity will take about 30 minutes (in addition to the watching of the film). It will be graded using the course rubric found here. It will assist students in meeting the following:

OBJECTIVES:

1. Students will analyze the ideologies–including democracy, tolerance, and intolerance–of the New England colonies.

2. Students will identify some of the causes of the growing unity among the colonies in the late 1600s.

This will help you think about:

1. The ideal balance between church and state.

2. The consequences of tolerance and intolerance.

3. The moral challenges democracies face.

To prepare for this discussion

In your initial post

  • Choose ONE of the topics below to discuss, referencing new knowledge from the Iris module:
    • Describe the range of emotions associated with being the parent of a child with special needs. Select two emotional states and describe how you, as a teacher, would work with a parent experiencing these emotions.
    • Identify and describe three roles that a parent of a child who has a disability might fulfill that are unlike the roles typically associated with parenting.
    • Reese is a young girl with cerebral palsy. Her primary means of mobility is a manual wheelchair, though she is also able to take a few independent steps. Reese’s parents have recently separated and are in the process of divorcing. Reese, her mom, and her two older siblings have temporarily relocated and are now living in the upstairs of her grandparents’ house. As a result of the move, Reese has transitioned to a new school. Although her mom is generally very involved with her child’s education, there are currently many stressors in her life. Describe at least two of the stressors, besides divorce, that Reese’s mom might be experiencing and explain how you think they might affect her time and involvement with the school.
    • Imagine you are a teacher in Reese’s new school. Describe three ideas you have for building a relationship with Reese’s family and how you would go about making the family feel welcome in your school.
    • Imagine that you, as Reese’s new teacher, have just returned from a visit to Reese’s grandparents. During your home visit, Reese’s mother vented about her failed relationship with her husband and the reasons for their divorce. Now the teachers in the teachers’ lounge are pushing you for the juicy details. What is your responsibility in this situation and why?
