  • Search the NYTIMES or Wall Street Journal newspaper or newspaper website for news stories that describe public health activities. Analyze whether they are an example of one of the three levels of prevention. (Do not search in professional journals for articles). Identify one story that characterizes one of the levels of prevention. You may also use a story that addresses more than one level of prevention. Limit your search to the past six months. In APA style, provide the author, the publication date, the title of the story, the author, the name of the newspaper/news source. Provide a brief summary of the story, then explain why this story meets the criterion for at least one of the levels of prevention. If you are ambitious, you can provide a justification for how the story meets more than one level of prevention. As CUNY students you have FREE access to the NYTimes and the Wall Street Journal by registering with your CUNY email address (see information below and on the Blackboard log in page). You can also access the NYTimes and/ or the Wall Street Journal through the Baruch Library using the Lexis Nexis Database. The link to the Baruch Library is in the left menu tab. Your Baruch user name and password were sent to your SPS email address the first week of class. It is different than your sps or blackboard log in credentials. If you need assistance locating it – contact the HelpDesk at HelpDesk@sps.cuny.eduAs an example – For primary prevention, I could cite:Johnson, K. (2011, August 17). School districts rediscover the value of fresh cooking. The New York Times, p. A16.Also found online as:Johnson, K. (2011, August 16). Schools restore fresh cooking to the cafeteria. The New York Times, retrieved from www.NYTimes.com Analyze the story to determine if it is an example of one of the levels of prevention: primary, secondary, tertiary.Summarize the key points and impact on health.Provide a justification for why this would be an example of the identified level of prevention.Reflect on your analysisHere is an example of the justification of the above story:Justification: Cooking meals from “scratch” (unprocessed food) may reduce the children’s consumption of high fat foods that lead to obesity, thus preventing it. This qualifies as an example of primary prevention. When implemented in the poorest school district neighborhoods, where screening has identified high rates of child obesity, this could also qualify as secondary prevention – an attempt at early treatment.Newspaper sites and databases you might wish to check include:

The Health & Science Sections on Tuesdays for both of these papers are a good place to start. However, you are not restricted to the science section. You can analyze any story that addresses a public health issue published on any day. Do not use blogs, CNN, MSNBC or other online news sources. As CUNY students – you have FREE access to both the NY Times and Wall Street Journal:https://myaccount.nytimes.com/verification/edupasshttp://www1.cuny.edu/sites/cunyufs/2018/03/09/wall-street-journal-access-for-cuny-faculty-and-students/You may use the table provided, (attached) or create your own format. Here is the rubric to be used to grade this assignment. discussion response 161

Response Guidelines

Review fellow learners’ posts and respond 100-word minimum response.

  • As a supervisor, one needs to lead by example and address any possible negative lack of competence by any subordinate or coworker. Understanding that some individuals have diverse backgrounds and others don’t will contribute whether or not comments about other groups or subcultures will occur. Certain subsections such as sexual orientation can be sensitive subject due others personal values and opinions. According to Paprock (2014) when discussing these issues, it is important to realize that we have all been on both sides of the oppression/oppressor coin at different points in our lives” (p. 288).
  • In the article the inclusive workplace: An ecosystem approach to diversity management by Mor Barak, M., E. (2000), the author made an interesting argument in reference to expanding diversity outside of the organization. In the article the author referred that an organization need look outside of their organization when it comes to diversity. Mor Barak stated that the organization need to include their organizations diversity and include a larger system that is associated with the organizations environment. The diversities organizations include the community, people in the state and local government that work with poor people, and work together and collaborate across culture and national boundaries and the focus is on global and mutual interest (Mor Barak, M.,E. 2000). Mor Barak also talks about the aging workforce and the shift in more women and ethnic groups that are replacing individuals in the work force. As stated by Beckett & Dungee-Anderson (1998), the different groups that are entering the workforce give hint to a more diverse workplace and mixed client pool in reference to human services organizations. Thus, making a need for a better developed paradigm for a greater inclusive work environment.
  • The ecological model of human development is an approach to human development that discusses how changes in the environment affect the development of an individual across his or her entire life span (Kirst-Ashman’s & Hull, 2019). This approach will allow for a professional to understand a holistic view to all the environmental factors that have an affect on an individual’s life. As a result, the ecological approach will provide a more direct framework that provides a more structured technique towards understanding the treatment processes amongst adolescents and young adults who are experiencing symptoms of depression. Therefore, there will be a clear view on the biological, emotional, and psychological factors that have an affect on the individual’s overall development. Bronfenbrenner discusses five environmental systems that impacts an individual’s growth and development. These systems are Micro, Mezzo, Exo, Macro, and Chrono (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2019). In the research, it shows how these factors are distinctive across all health issues within an individual’s life (Lounsbury & Mitchell, 2009). Moreover, it tackles the individual psychosocial factors that are involved in the occurrence of these health issues. There are many challenges that an individual struggling with depression face on an everyday basis. Because these individuals are faced with these challenges on an everyday basis causes them to be more aware of the resources that are available to mitigate the problem. As a result, this will provide more resilience toward the symptoms of depression and more management toward the problem as well as awareness to the environmental factors that have caused the symptoms of depression to occur.
  • After reading Forte (2007) concepts of systems theory, research has shown that each system is connected in some type of way by space and time and is influenced by external stimuli within the environment that may have an affect on the system as a whole. Forte states that if there is a break in the system then it will cause an alteration within the whole system. In understanding how this can relate to the concept of depression amongst adolescences and young adult, it shows how the negative affects of depressive symptoms will have a major affect on the community as a whole. In other words, when one person experience symptoms of depression it will take affect to the entire community in counter transference of emotions. Therefore, systems theory provides a structural framework in understanding what environmental factors are associated with the affects of depression amongst adolescences and young adults and how these factors are affecting theentire community. The application of the concepts within systems theory and my personal understanding of how professionals work with individuals to mitigate the situations within the community allows me to see how to put together concepts within a group to provide beneficial treatment plans to resolve the problem. Forte (2007)use of mapping gave me a greater understanding into the concept as a whole and how the use of mapping shows the overlapping concepts that may be associated with the problem and how to advocate within the community and showing how the community can come to relate to the problem at hand and provide techniques that benefit the community in resolving the problem.
  • Physical resilience is the flexible and adaptive response of physical infrastructure to external shock, such as an earthquake, flood, heat wave, or terrorist attack (Zellner, et al., 2011, p. 45). Social resilience describes how quickly individuals, groups, organizations, and institutions respond practically to external or internal shocks (Zellner, et al., 2011, p. 45). In working with human service professionals to advance resilience skills in children who experienced tornados that lead to multiple deaths, I would use a more traditional approach to working with the school and the children. I would focus on the trauma and the age group of the children by providing community resources such as grief counselors, Trauma-informed groups to come in, as well as disaster emergency organizations like FEMA and the American Red Cross. I would also include the parents and or guardians of those children and provide education and assistance to the administrators and teachers to help them know and recognize the signs of the children who may be in crisis.

Handling a situation where an employee brought to my attention that another employee appears to be guy, I would address the concern through supervision and provide continued education on the matter. One way to increase your awareness of ethical and therapeutic considerations in working with LGBT clients is to take advantage of continuing education workshops sponsored by national, regional, state, and local professional organizations (Corey and Corey, 2019).

In a work environment, professional supervisors have the responsibility of addressing and making employees aware of multiculturalism. The ACA code of ethics state counseling supervisors are aware of and address the role of multiculturalism/ diversity in the supervisory relationship (ACA, 2014). Through training, continued education and supervision, employees can gain the competency and awareness of others to enhance their skills and knowledge.

How could you apply the information that you learned in this article to your current or future work situation? The information obtained can work closely with my future work situation because I work for an organization that is embedded in the community and hire individuals from all walks of life, race, ethnicity, and recovering addiction addicts. For example, we have teams that go out and work with individuals and the teams include a peer support (recovering addict), counselor, and social worker. In order to be effective in the work environment, the organization will have to have a wider range of diversity outside of the organization. The benefit of the organization will be that can capitalize on the increasing global market by employing individuals form different nationalities in or outside their native country (Beatty, R. P., & Ritter, J. R. 1986).

Response Guidelines

Include relevant, required information; adequate explanations; and alternative viewpoints. Offer additional resources that may help expand their perspective, divergent issues for consideration, and suggestions for enhancing their discussion. Your responses to your peers should contain at least 250 words as well as two scholarly resources.

Bronfenbrenner’s concept of ecological development challenge the strict use of stage developmental processes in human development in that it forces an individual to go more in depth into the problem and utilizing more external techniques to resolve the problem. The importance in knowing the ecological systems concepts in understanding the implementation of the programs within the community provided for ethnically, economically and socially diverse individuals is as stated before in that it allows for many resources to come together in assisting one another in the problem of depression.

Response Guidelines

Respond to the initial post of one learner by citing additional resources that may help his or her work, presenting divergent issues for consideration, and providing suggestions for enhancing the post. Your response must contain at least 150 words and one scholarly resource that your peer did not incorporate in his or her initial post.

One organization that I would contact is the Children’s Disaster Services. This organization provides childcare in shelters and disaster assistance centers by training and certifying volunteers to respond to traumatized children through a safe, calm, and reassuring presence (www.disastercenter.com). This organization also works with schools, community agencies, and parents to provide workshops to help understand and meet the necessary needs of children who have experienced trauma and disasters (www.disastercenter.com).

case study about ebussines and supply chain management

This is a case of Whirlpool (an electrical appliances manufacture in the U.S).

In late 1990 and early 2000s, Whirlpool encountered a big drop in profit. People in the company blamed Whirlpool’s sales team were “Sales disablers” as they were unable to sell products in the market. After examining the sales record, it was found that sales did rise to record levels in 2000 as Whirlpool launched some innovative products coincided with an uptick in the housing industry in the states. The business was growing but the profit was decreasing instead. Finally, you looked at the balance sheet (e.g. spending, inventory records), you discovered that the supply chain function could be the root cause.

You interviewed the Head of Supply Chain Department, he simply said that his unit department was doing fine. He claimed that they delivered every order on time; their production lines were running smooth; warehouse was full of stocks (in general).

Based on what you have learnt in this master program so far, identify the potential problems of Whirpool’s Supply Chain faults? For example, did a popular product supply meet the market demand? Was the prediction accurate? What was the inventory level? Would that be too many inventories in the warehouse? There are no right or wrong answers. Please have your assessment no more than two pages.

exercise 2 3

Exercises 2/3

Now that you have developed your research question, you need to begin the process of developing your research design. Since your proposal will ultimately involve multiple methods proposal, recognize that the process will differ for your qualitative and quantitative studies. You will move toward the development of your proposed design by first providing a more detailed analysis of the research articles on your chosen topic

(from Exercise 1).

Exercise #2 Quantitative Survey Research

A.

You will complete Parts I-IV for each of your quantitative/survey research articles.

The issues you need to address are outlined below, and your critical analysis will be

approximately two typed pages for each article.

I.Theoretical Orientation.

What is the research question/topic? What theory is presented? Why is the research

important? What are the hypotheses?

II.Methods.

1. What is the unit of analysis? What is the time dimension? What sampling procedure

was used? Was it appropriate for the research question/ the population under

consideration? Discuss the sample size (and demographic characteristics), and

representativeness.

2. What are the independent and dependent variables? What other key (control)

variables are identified? How are the central concepts defined and operationalized?

(Include the names/definitions, and indicators of each major concept.) Is the level of

measurement appropriate? How does the study assess reliability and validity?

III.Data Collection and Analysis Critique

1. What was the response rate, and does the author address the issue of nonresponse

bias? Do the questions asked of respondents (number, wording) adequately reflect the

concepts? For closed-ended questions, were the response categories appropriate, exhaustive, and mutually exclusive? For open-ended questions, how were the responses categorized? Were the questions clear and unambiguous, avoiding social

desirability, etc.? 2. What statistical analyses were are applied to the data? What are the key research results? Are the findings clearly presented, with appropriate inference about the strength and direction of the association and statistical significance of

hypothesized relationships? Does the author make causal inferences? What evidence is presented regarding direction of influence and nonspuriousness?

IV.Conclusions and Reporting.

Is the method used appropriate, or well-suited, to addressing the research question or

testing the hypothesis?

How do the researchers address ethical concerns? Are procedures implemented that

adequately protect participants’ rights and welfare?

What substantive conclusions are drawn from the study? Are the conclusions

appropriate to the design and the representativeness of the sample? Does the author

discuss alternative explanations of findings or results? Does the research replicate,

modify, extend, or contradict previous studies?

Has the researcher reported any shortcomings in the study design or execution? Does

the author discuss the implications of study results for future research?

What do you think of the quality of the research?

B. Proposed Research Design

This section will be approximately three-four typed pages.

First, provide a critical integration (compare and contrast) of the articles to

summarize “what is known” about the topic. You might note important similarities or

differences in theoretical orientation, sampling/methods, data analysis/results,

conclusions, strengths and limitations. Taking the articles together, what do you now

know overall about your research topic, and what gaps in existing knowledge remain?

Then, propose an alternative survey design to replicate, extend, or improve upon

the studies you reviewed, particularly addressing any noted errors, limitations, or

deficiencies.

What population/sampling procedure would you use; why? What mode of survey

administration will you use: why? Will you use the same or different questions as those

in your literature; why?

Include your questionnaire. You will need at least two indicators (or an existing

scale) each for your independent variable, dependent variable, and control variables.

After these are approved, you will pre-test them on about five cases, and you will

include the results (what you learned) in your final proposal paper.

the sixth extinction book questions

Reflect on and respond to one of the following questions:

  1. Kolbert welcomes us here to the concept of the Anthropocene, a new geological epoch proposed by Paul Crutzen. What is the Anthropocene? What did Paul Crutzen discover and how is this discovery related to the Anthropocene? Do you think we are in the Anthropocene? Why or why not?
  2. Why are coral reefs an important aquatic ecosystem? What is predicted to happen to coral reefs if current emissions trends continue? How does the temperature of water affect the function of corals? (i.e. explain coral bleaching). Explain how coral reefs support aquatic ecosystems.
  3. What can happen when CO2 dissolves in water? What is expected to happen if CO2 emissions continue at the current rate? What is most significant about the rate in which CO2 is currently entering the atmosphere? Why is this rate concerning? Should these consequences be of concern? Explain

Do not use quotes – the posting must be in your own words and demonstrate that you have read the assigned chapters. Use examples from the book, and not just one chapter. The questions are written to help you engage the material in Kolbert’s book.

Write in complete sentences, narrative form, no bullet-points. 300 words minimum.
