Submit assignment #2 (both activities must be completed in one document) to the assignments/dropbox on d2l by Sunday, Feb 9, 11:59 pm.
Write an argumentative essay of 800-1200 words on some aspect of “the media.” You must use at least one external source, which should be attributed in the text and bibliographical information for the work should be listed in a “Work(s) Cited” section on the last page of your essay. Your intended readers are intellectual (college-educated) people with an interest in social media.
Explain the activities that occur when initiating a project.
As a Project Manager for Kingston-Bryce Limited you have been assigned to create a business case. The Board of Directors for Kingston-Bryce Limited (KBL) is eager to move forward with the acquisition of their competitor. The acquisition of the competitor will enable KBL to expand operations and triple their workforce and will take 18 months to complete with a projected cost of $5 million. In order for this acquisition to be successful, you will need to use your project management skills to ensure success.
Your task is to create a business case in Microsoft Word to justify the steps necessary to complete the acquisition. The business case is essential for providing justification and details of the scope of work for the project. You will need to be creative and develop the following items as if you were running the project.
Include the following (you will need to create these items):
For each project, you will be given a news story
and a scientific journal article
that goes with it, posted to Canvas by the instructor. Each of these journal articles will have been published in a reputable online magazine, newspaper, or journal. The news story may or may not be.
You will then write a short essay, 1-2 pages in length, detailing the parts of the scientific method discussed in your article and comparing that information to what was reported in the news story. Each entry will be written in a logical and professional manner.
What is turned in to the instructor?
For each week that a journal assignment is due, you will submit your journal entry via Canvas by the due date.
Entry Content
You will be graded on the following content that combines information you obtain from both the news story and the scientific article:
Introduction: This section identifies the subject of the scientific study. You will also identify the problem or observation that spurred the research. Is this problem or observation the same that is presented in the news story? If they differ, how so? You will then transition into the body of the journal.
Body: In this section, you will identify the hypothesis the scientist was testing. Remember that a hypothesis is a testable educated guess. Thus, it is not appropriate to pose a question here. However, while reading your articles, it can be helpful to ask yourself what explanation scientists tried to use to explain their initial observation. Does the news article report the scientists’ hypothesis? Then, transition into the next section of the body.
Here, you will identify the test or experiment that was performed to address the hypothesis. You can be detailed here. It may be helpful to pull from other sources if you do not fully understand how the experiment was conducted. Does the news article discuss any of the methods that were used by the scientists? Did they explain it correctly? Is the information the same, or did they leave something out? After detailing how the experiment was done compared to how it reported in the media, you will transition into a discussion of the results.
In this section of your entry, you will identify the experimental results that the scientists obtained. What did the scientists find after doing their experiment? Did the news article report the same results? Did they leave anything out or add anything compared to the scientific article? Again, you can be detailed here. After detailing the results, you will transition into the conclusion sections.
Here you will identify the conclusion of the study. In this part, you may address one or more of the following questions: What were the new finding of this study? Were these findings the same that was reported by the news? Did the news interpret the scientists’ conclusions correctly? How were the findings explained by both sources? Finally you will transition into your conclusion section.
Conclusion: Here you will signal the end of your entry. In this section you will discuss whether or not the news story was a representative reporting of the scientific study. Did the news change anything or leave out something important from the scientific study? Summarize the important content from your entry, then you will end with a definitive final statement.
Constructing your journal entry
In addition to the criteria above, you will be graded on the quality of your writing; please write with proper grammar, punctuation, and style.
All sources (including the original 2 articles) should be properly documented. You must include an APA style reference page. See Canvas on detailing APA style.

Discussion 1
Human services professionals can be challenged by the sheer complexity of ethical decisions when working with social workers, counselors, caregivers, and administrative employees. By now, it should be clear that ethics and morals tend to be challenging.
The question remains, “Given all that I know about moral rules, and given the unique demands of this situation, what is the most selfless, compassionate, loving act possible” (Sommers-Flanagan & Sommers-Flanagan, 2015, p. 35). When it is seemingly impossible to answer this honorable approach, what can a supervisor or service provider do?
Consider options you might think most appropriate as you seek to resolve ethical quandaries, giving your attention to the National Organization of Human Services’ ethical code, “Ethical Standards for Human Service Professionals” (linked in the Resources). Also, Chapter 1, page 8 of the Becoming an Ethical Helping Professional text prioritizes the seven resources to which a human services professional may turn in an attempt to resolve a quandary or dilemma.
Suppose an employee service provider has decided to help her elderly client determine whether to sign a life insurance agreement that could benefit the client’s neighbor (the neighbor has encouraged the client to sign the agreement). Post how you would handle the situation.
Your initial post must:
Discussion 2
Suppose you are supervising an employee who works in a substance abuse treatment facility. The employee reports that a client she is caring for has informed her that the client no longer wants to live and wants help to commit suicide.
The principle is that every client has the right to confidentiality and that the caregiver must respect this right. However, the client also has the free right to make her own decisions in accordance with the principle of self-determination. The employee wants to report the desire of the client to do harm to herself in order to save her life, but the principle of confidentiality conflicts with the right of self-determination.
Discuss your instructions to the employee on how best to resolve this dilemma. Analyze how these instructions will be effective.
Bark and Brew Cafe
My friend’s idea of starting the bark and brew cafe is quite a unique and pace-setting business concept. Her cafe will not be an ordinary coffee Cafe but a coffee establishment that attends to the needs of both human beings and their dogs. However, the Bark and Brew cafe will not be labeled as a pet store but a coffee cafe. While the idea bears the strong potential to make it in the industry, there may be a challenge in implementing it since the shop will serve coffee drinkers without pets and some customers who do not enjoy the company of dogs. I believe that numerous people would dread the idea of getting served alongside dogs whenever they visit their favorite cafes, while others would be delighted to share a snack with their dogs away from their homes. For this reason, an in depth competitive analysis is inevitable for the success of the cafe.
Strategy for Competitive Analysis
I would opt for the product category competition analysis. This strategy works best in situations where the product is similar between competitors, but there exists a difference in the way the product gets served to customers or consumers. In this case, the competitors to Bark and Brew cafe, such as Starbucks, only offer coffee and some snacks to customers. On the other hand, Bark and Brew cafe will serve customers and offer their dogs snacks to allow them to eat together. In their article, Dirisui, Iyiola, and Ibidunni (2013) explain that identifying a meaningful product-driven differentiation can be especially fruitful in gaining and sustaining competitive advantage. Bark and Brew Cafe has a competitive advantage due to the differentiation of its snacks that suit even pets. However, the need for a proper competitive advantage is still necessary since the cafe will attempt to serve dogs in an environment that is commonly known for human services. This move may not be welcome by some, but it could also be a game-changer for the person behind the idea and the entire industry at large.
Sources of Information
In handling the competitor analysis, I can visit and analyze some of the major competitor websites. This visit will put me in a position to fully understand their product specialties and plans as well as the objectives of the competitors. I can then visit the different social media pages of the competitors on various platforms. On these platforms, I can embark on analyzing their ratings and the comments they receive from clients. Other effective sources for information on competitors are handing out questionnaires and carrying out interviews. The sources will help shed light on the current positions of the competitors, their strengths and weaknesses, and well as gathering people’s opinions on the potential of bark and brew cafe.
Before handing out of both online and hard copy questionnaires and carrying out interviews, I will need to understand the scope of the market and the cafe’s target customers. The main target population will be made up of coffee drinkers with dog pets. They can be interviewed and provided with the questionnaire in order to get their opinion on the existing cafes and their reaction towards the idea of bark and brew. Since the bark and brew seek to serve not only the coffee drinkers who keep dogs but also coffee drinkers without the company of dogs, it would be essential to get the views of the potential customers who do not have dog pets. Adom, Nyarko, and Som (2016) argue that embarking on a business venture without a proper competitor analysis is like running into a battlefield with a blindfold. This analysis will, therefore, enable my friend to understand the market before fully investing in the cafe.
