race and racism 3

This past week we focused on race and racism. These are very touchy subjects, and the topics of race and racism are complex and multi-layered. Addressing race and racism in the context of a college classroom presents us with a unique set of challenges. But it seems now, more than ever, we need to engage in open, honest dialogue about these issues.

From our course readings for this week, both Blumer and Bonilla-Silva claim that racism is not just about “ideology” or individual feelings. Citing from each of the readings, respond to the following: How do this week’s readings challenge “commonsense” or popular ideas about racism?

This essay must be between 500-600 words

The project will reflect your views and interpretation of the topic. This project is designed to help you stretch your mind and your abilities to be the creative, innovative, and critical thinker you already are!

If there are questions or points associated with your chosen topic, be sure to answer all of the listed questions and address all of the items in that topic. If your topic asks you to do several things related to the topic, be sure to do each of the things listed.
  2. The listed topics each have a certain presentation format or writing genre with it (video, essay, poem, etc), and each topic involves looking at a distinct form of presentation (oral speech, novel, visual art, poetry, etc. And each topic involves some sort of challenge or theme that is relevant to modern work and life. Be creative and admire the creativity of others.

TOPIC:

  • What Price Progress? Essay: Economic Change and Consequences. Chapter 28 of our class text has four short reading selections from Charles Dickens, known for his literary realism in the mid-1800s, when many struggled trying to adapt to unrelenting economic changes. The readings are Old Curiosity Shop (p.944); Sketches by Boz (p. 947); Dombey and Son (p.951), and Hard Times (pp.952). Select just one of these readings. english essay 2 peer review

For Essay 2, we are doing something a little different for Peer Review this week. As I explained the in announcement last week about it, instead of being paired up with a fellow classmate, you are required to see one of the tutors in our Writing Center instead. You can do this either in person (the best possible way) or on-line if you are unable to make an appointment. To make that appointment with a tutor, please see the instructions in the announcement. (You can just click on the Announcement page on the left side if you need to pull it up again.)

To that appointment with the tutor, you need to bring a printed copy of your Essay 2 project (if you are doing the visual argument, the tutor can either help you on your visual or your response).

By Friday at 11:59pm, you need to post/upload both the rough draft that you went over/discussed with the tutor, and a picture of the pink sheet that the tutor will give you.

If you see a tutor through an online appointment, instead of a picture of the pink sheet, which you will not have access to, please answer the following questions.

  1. What specifically did you work on with the tutor? Give two specific answers in response as well as the suggestions/change you discussed with the tutor.
  2. What is one specific thing you are more confident about since you had this session with the tutor? Be specific.
  3. What is one specific thing that you worked on, that you now know how to do? Be specific on the steps to accomplish this.
  4. After finishing the session with the tutor, what are you going to do next with the assignment?
  5. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the least helpful and 10 being the most helpful, how do you feel your session with the tutor went?

If you are stuck about what sort of things you should go over with a tutor about your draft, here are some options of what to discuss. Remember that your session with a tutor is only 30 minutes, so you might not be able to get through this entire list. My suggestion would be to focus on three or four to take with you to your tutoring session.

  1. Does the author present the issue in his or her introduction? Is the attention grabber effective? Is the background information sufficient? (If the reader had not read the text) Why are these things effective/sufficient?
  2. Does the writer introduce the text they have chosen somewhere in the introduction? Do they have an academic summary in their introduction? (Introduce only the sources you will be using). Is the academic summary missing any parts (main argument, support, purpose, tone)?
  3. Is there thesis an argument? Does it have an antithesis? In the thesis, is the writer’s argument clear? Is the author’s opinion clearly stated? Are you clear on his or her position from the start?
  4. Does the thesis include at least two rhetorical strategies? Is the thesis clear about the effectiveness of the author’s rhetorical strategies?
  5. Does the writer support each of his or her claims with quotes from the text/movie? Are the examples vivid and specific rather than general? Are there at least six direct quotes?
  6. Does the writer explain the quotes/information? Does the explanation connect back to the thesis? Is there an explanation/analysis after each example? Does the writer effectively use PIE format?
  7. Are all examples from the text cited properly with in-text citation? Is the paper formatted in MLA style? Is there a works cited page in the end?
  8. Does the writer have a conclusion that restates the thesis and gives a final thought?
  9. Are there any parts that were confusing or needed more explanation?
  10. What is one line that you particularly liked in their draft? Why do you like it?
  11. Do they have a creative title?
  12. Mark your favorite line. Why is it your favorite?

annotated bibliography 512

There are many components to nonprofit organizational management within the context of human resources, supervision, and professional development of staff. Chapter 9 of your text, Developing Nonprofit and Human Service Leadership, briefly discusses some of these areas. For this Assignment, you will create an annotated bibliography to discuss the tenets of organizational management or one of the functions of a human service administrator in relation to human resources, supervision, and staff development covered in Chapter 9 of your text.

Directions:

Develop an annotated bibliography based on one of the following areas of organizational nonprofit management of your choice:

  • Interviewing, hiring, recruitment, and termination policies
  • Employee motivators
  • Employment laws (you can review literature covering more than one of the subtopics under employee laws)
    • Civil rights
    • Discrimination (pregnancy, perceived disability, race/ethnicity, language, beliefs, preferences, orientation, gender)
    • Equal wages
  • Training and development
  • Performance management
  • Supervision
  • Diversity in the workplace as a tenet to organizational leadership

Along with your topic of choice, other suggested keywords are nonprofit management, human service leadership, organizational management, organizational leadership, nonprofit human resources, and principles of nonprofit organizational leadership.

Suggested databases that can be accessed through the Library are:

  • Books 24×7
  • Business Source Complete
  • eBook Academic Collection from EBSCO
  • eBook Collection from EBSCO
  • Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL)

An annotated bibliography presents a comprehensive, yet focused, selection of scholarly sources on a specific topic. The purpose of this annotated bibliography is to identify resources for and to develop a deeper understanding of the tenets of organizational management, supervision, and the professional development of staff. Annotations inform the reader of the material and information provided along with the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited.

Your Assignment will be 3–4 pages in length and will include a 1-paragraph introductory synopsis along with a list of the research resources you used to serve as the preface to the annotated bibliography. Your annotated bibliography will include a list of citations to books, articles, and documents (the bibliography). Each citation will be followed by a brief descriptive and evaluative paragraph (the annotation), which provides a review of the literature on a particular subject. An annotated bibliography is not the same thing as a bibliography or an abstract. An annotation is descriptive and critical whereas as abstract does not include a critical evaluation of the writing or study.

Your annotated bibliography will consist of six references from at least four peer-reviewed journal articles, one credible website, and Chapter 9 of your text, Developing Nonprofit and Human Service Leaders.

Your references will be in alphabetical order with each entry properly APA formatted and each annotation about 1 paragraph (4–10 sentences) in length. The Assignment should be 3–5 pages in length.

In this annotation, you will briefly describe the resource. If available, you could provide a descriptive annotation that evaluates the success or reliability of the book. You might also compare or contrast the source with another source on the topic. Determine if the author has a bias or makes assumptions. List any biases. You could describe the author’s conclusion and whether or not there are significant attachments or appendices such as charts, maps, bibliographies, photographs, documents, tests or questionnaires. You could also explain how this work is useful. You could also compare or contrast this work with another (or others) cited. Is the work, its data, or its view out-of-date, yet a valid historical reference? Describe your reaction to the item. Use technical writing format: not “I” or “my.” You will need four more entries after this one.

Please read the following in your textbook, Developing Nonprofit and Human Service Leaders:

Chapter 9: “Human Resource”

In Chapter 9, you will discover the current rules and policies regarding hiring and recruitment, compensation and benefits, training and development, and performance management. Strategies for developing and retaining productive employees will be covered as well as techniques for dealing with employee lack of productivity. Creating a positive and stimulating work environment is the principal theme throughout the chapter.
