Reviewing the case study titled “GE Healthcare (A): Innovating for Emerging Markets” may be helpful in supporting your arguments. 

Write a two to three (2-3) page paper in which you:

1. Determine two (2) specific ethical issues that General Electric (GE) Healthcare faced when implementing its strategy to introduce low cost diagnostic equipment to developing countries. Recommend two (2) actions that GE can take to resolve these ethical issues.
2. Analyze the concepts of professional and applied ethics and determine whether GE Healthcare breeched these concepts in the development of its low cost alternatives for diagnostic medical equipment. Provide one (1) specific example to support your rationale.
3. Determine whether GE Healthcare has any responsibility in resolving the issue of a preference for male children in cultures where its diagnostic ultrasound products are sold. Recommend one (1) strategy that would enable GE Healthcare to balance its responsibility of continued growth and development with any ethical or moral concerns investors and human rights groups might have regarding the use of its equipment in controlling the birth rates of male children in some cultures.

First, watch:

• You will watch portions of Medical Revolution: The Gut Microbiome (Links to an external site.) [Video file, 48:58 minutes]. This video is broken up into multiple segments.  To view the assigned portions please do the following:
  • Go to the EC Library NS110 Research Guide for Human Microbiome Assignment (Links to an external site.). 
  • You will be set up for Step #1.  As Step #1 indicates, click and watch the embedded video (Introduction: Medical Revolution: The Gut Microbiome [Video file, 02:34 minutes]).  
  • Then, click on Step #2 on the top left side of the NS110 Research Guide page. You will see a list of diseases/conditions: Obesity, Anti-aging, Diabetes, Cancer, Emotions, Autism and communication, and Mental health.
    • Decide which disease/condition you are most interested in researching.
    • Click on a video(s) within that disease/condition category to view.

Next, read/review:

• Review the assigned readings for information about the human gut microbiome and the disease/condition you selected.
• Click on Step #3 of the NS110 Research Guide for Human Microbiome Assignment (Links to an external site.) and select your chosen disease/condition from the drop-down menu.  You will find additional resources on your topic. 

Next, submit the following:

• Write a 750 – 1000 word essay (3-4 pages, not including the title and reference pages) on what you have learned about the gut microbiome’s influence on the disease/condition you have selected.
• Be sure to include the following points in your analysis:

1. How do scientists think the gut microbiome influences this disease/condition?

2. What kinds of research have been reported so far (e.g., just hypotheses or actual lab experiments using mice/other animals or human subjects)? Describe the research and ideas discussed in the video and your readings.

3. How would you describe the current level of understanding about the gut microbiome and the disease/condition you selected?

4. Are therapies or treatments now being used for patients with this disease/condition? Do you think this a good thing or a bad thing, and why?

5. Did you find any sensationalizing or grandiose claims being made for therapies that use the gut microbiome to treat this disease/condition? Do the claims differ from what you found in the research? Explain any differences you have found.

6. Would you recommend that someone suffering from this disease/condition try the therapies you examined? Why or why not?

We briefly studied Ancient Greece and Rome’s arts, ideas and innovations.  Additionally, we have identified ways in which these expressions continue to impact American culture in 2019.

In Paper 5 you will discuss the influences of Ancient Greek and Roman arts, ideas and innovations in our culture today.  You will select 1 example from each of these categories for both societies, introduce the original expression and explain how you observe a current application.  In this way, you will discuss 6 total examples in both their original form and their contemporary usage.

Arts– includes, but is not limited to: painting, sculpture, music, dance, architecture, music, performance (theater), poetry and literature

Ideas– includes, but is not limited to: philosophy, religion and politics/government

Innovations– includes, but is not limited to: scientific and mathematical advances, engineering/technical discoveries and changes in social practices.

Also, in your total of 6 examples, you will include at least 2 listed in the class content folders for Ancient Greece and/or Ancient Rome and 2 examples mentioned in the text.

The format of the paper is open, but here is a suggested structure:

Paragraph 1: Introduction — say what you are going to do and identify the examples you are going to examine (name them).

Paragraph 2: Example 1 — talk about your first item and its importance in its original society (Greek or Roman). Explore how you see this example applied in our contemporary culture

Paragraph 3 -7: Go through the same process with the remaining examples.

Paragraph 8: Conclusion – which of the above examples seems most significant to you?  Do you think most people realize how much these ancient societies influence contemporary values and culture?  Was this, in fact, a new realization for you?

For this assignment, we will drill down (pun intended) on the controversies that surround hydraulic fracturing, typically shortened to “hydro-fracking”, for natural gas. This process is not new, but technological innovations in recent years have made it a much more practical and widespread technique to obtain natural gas. Fracking has supporters and detractors, but many states are now allowing fracking, and the practice is so widespread and effective that the prices for natural gas have fallen precipitously in recent years. However, there have been a host of environmental concerns with the rapid increase in the use of fracking. These include health issues created by water and air pollutants, damage to once wild and pristine environments that cannot be undone, and also earthquakes.

This assignment asks you to analyze an article from a Houston newspaper by A. Kuchment that reviews recent research on the increase in the number of earthquakes in Texas. This increase has apparently been linked to the increased use of fracking techniques. The US Geologic Survey has also published information on this issue. Carefully read the news article:

• Kuchment, A. (2016, May 21).  Fracking activities caused majority of recent Texas quakes (Links to an external site.).  Standard Times.
• Take notes and pay special attention to the language used in the news article.

   You will do research on Representation in the Media and Entertainment and write a 3-4 page essay answering the question: 

   What is my personal responsibility to the way media and entertainment portrays marginalized identities? (People of Color, Women, African Americans/Blacks, Latinos, LGBTQ, etc)

   First, begin by making sure you understand what Representation in the Media and Entertainment is=How our own identity (Hispanic Female, Black Male, Queer Person, etc) and cultures are presented in popular and mainstream media: TV, Film, LIterature, Art, Theatre, Magazines, etc. -does not include social media.
   Then, before you have determined your thesis do your research (because you can’t make an educated argument if you haven’t done research).  You must do research, you can’t write this essay with only your existing knowledge.  Here are some research topics:

   3. Find 3 examples from the research that back up your argument
   4. Find 2 examples in the research that go against your argument
   5. Why is this topic important?  What are the Consequences?
