Hello class,

Nonverbal communication and verbal communication are the two types of communication and are both of equal importance when it comes to working in a group. Nonverbal communication is communication through forms other than verbally speaking. This can be things like facial expressions, posture, body language, and eye contact. In the context of a group, these forms of nonverbal communication can speak very loudly – almost as loud as someone could with words. For example, if someone in the group has a bad posture, isn’t making eye contact, makes upsetting facial expressions, and is closed off in their body language, you could infer that they probably don’t want to be part of the group. If someone is engaging with eye contact, opening up with their body language, and smiling, you could infer that they do. In the context of working in groups with unfamiliar people, nonverbal communication cues are crucial. Verbal communication refers to communication done through spoken words. This is primarily seen in face to face conversation in the context of groups, but not always. Verbal communication can also refer to phone and text message communication, which is the type of communication I’m using with my group in this class! The advantages of verbal communication are that everyone can communciate their thoughts directly and effectively. Speaking directly with one another saves time in group settings, rather than communicating nonverbally and hoping your group catches on to your thoughts displayed through your actions.

Personally, I feel really good about how I use nonverbal and verbal communication in the groups in my life. In my group for this class, I use verbal communciation via phone, text, and our group forum to express my thoughts regarding our work. I’ve chosen to be straight forward, as have my group members, and we haven’t had communication issues so far! In my group / team at work, we all communicate verbally and are pretty comfortable with that, but we also pick up on nonverbal cues like if we see someone acting closed off or seeming to be struggling, we check in.

Hello everyone,

Verbal and non verbal communication are ways of expressing our feelings to others. Both types of communication speaks different volumes. Non-verbal communication is the use of message components other than words to generate meaning (Engleberg, 2017). An Advantage to non-verbal communication is it adds meaning to a verbal message, like telling someone thank you with a smile. Also, information can also be easily presented through visual and silent means with non verbal communication. According to Engleberg (2017), tone of voice, directness of eye contact, and physical proximity of group members can reveal at least as much about their thoughts and feelings as the words they speak. This advantage helps to understand what those whom do not say much are feeling. Disadvantages concerning non-verbal communication is the communication is imprecise and indeterminate. Without using words, it is hard to give the direct meaning of a non-verbal cue. Another disadvantage is one can miss a cue, while focusing on  a certain aspect of the communicator. Everything is happening at once and it is hard to catch everything at once. Verbal communication is the way in which the words in a language are used to generate meaning (Engleberg, 2017). Advantages of verbal communication is it is time saving and quicker to get feedback. Also, it gives a clearer understanding of communication making it a more reliable way to communicate. A disadvantage of verbal commmunication is in different cutures it is hard to understand what they are speaking of. I would improve my verbal and nonverbal communication by trying not to frown so much. I tend to frown alot, which mades people think that I am angry, (in most cases I don’t, but in other cases it is irritation). Also, trying to be more vocal where people can understand me, without me feeling timid of how they will feel. I just may help more people this way.

3) C.D  Re: Topic 3 DQ 1

Verbal and non-verbal communication is inevitable during group interactions. It is how one goes about each communication style that depends if it is an advantage or disadvantage within the group. When done correctly verbal communication can strengthen one’s idea. They can use their voice to persuade and or lead the group. Verbal communication does not always go as plan though. Many times if not done carefully the meaning behind ones communication can get distorted. Due to the presence of various barriers in effective communication, it happens that the intended meaning of the message changes for the intended person which causes a lot of problems in the future (Reddy, 2019). Nonverbal communication can be just as easy and effective when done correctly. One advantage is that it can be convenient and saves time. Something as simple as starting a group chatis a great way to get in contact with a number of people within a group to relay the message that is needed at the press of a button. Unfortunately, there can be downfalls for such communication. One example is that it can come off as very vague. Many times, nonverbal communication can lack emotion which is needed at times to get the message across correctly. I know that although emotions are needed, one way I could improve my communication skills is lowering the intensity. Although I can keep composure in a professional group setting sometimes with more personal groups, I tend to let me emotions get the best of me which I consider a disadvantage

4)J. G  Re: Topic 3 DQ 1

Hello,

Verbal and non-verbal communication both have positive and negative elements that affect relationships. Verbal communication is beneficial for a culture that is low-context because verbal communication is the more direct or literal form of communication between the two. Verbal also can be used through various forms such as face to face, fax to fax, email, utilizing a phone, and letter to name a few. A problem with verbal is that even though verbal is more direct, determining the intention is difficult to figure out by itself. Non-verbal communication is good for determining the intentions behind actions and words but also the feeling attached to them. The flaw with non-verbal is that it focused on the emotional element of people but deciphering non-verbal intentions can be difficult to understand at times. Overall, verbal conveys the literal thought and non-verbal conveys the intentions and feelings.

Relating to improving my verbal and non-verbal communication I have areas I am aware of that need improvement. For example, I often speak in an abstract method always having a deeper meaning and ignore basic understanding in society. I try to simplify my thoughts into a manner that is less confusing because I understand everyone does not want a riddle or deep meaning in every statement. Being mindful of this I try to match the way I convey thoughts to the person I am interacting with. For non-verbal I have a stoic face so people in the past have trouble determining my intentions behind my words and actions. Overall, there are areas that I can improve in that will help my communication, which will have a profound effect on the level of success I will achieve in the future.

Hello everyone,

Ambiguous language describes speech that doesn’t have a singular meaning , but represents different ideas, objects or individuals (Alley Dog, 2020). An example would be using the word high in a manner relating to elevation, reference for drug use, or describing someone powerful. Pronouns are also an example of ambiguous language.Using the term them is easier than saying the name of each person in the group. Ambiguous language that could cause a miscommunication in the group is using the same terms that could mean one thing to one person and another to the other person. For example, using they could mean Sally an Paul, but in reality, it is Sally Paul and George. Group members can avoid many misunderstandings by overcoming language-based obstacles to communication (Engleberg & Wynn, 2017). Being more specific when communicating to others is essential  to ensure that everyone is on the same page. My language choice could lead to a breakdown of communication when referring to any ambiguous language that requires more detail.

2)J. G      Re: Topic 3 DQ 2

Hello,

In language there are four common types of language challenges such as abstract words, bypassing language, jargon, and offensive language with the first three often causing miscommunication or being ambiguous. An abstract word is an idea or thought that is not tangible or that can be sensed by the five senses (Engleberg, & Wynn, 2017). The ambiguity in abstract words can cause confusion in the group because the intention of the speaker and the perception of the audience may not always align. Bypassing language is a miscommunication that occurs when two parties have different meanings for the same word (Engleberg, & Wynn, 2017). Bypassing miscommunications can cause misunderstandings between parties that can hinder the progress of a group. Jargon is a shorthand that allows people to convey thought in a concise and short method but the problem is that jargon is something learned over time but it can be confusing or ambiguous to newcomers (Engleberg, & Wynn, 2017). There are benefits to jargon in an established group but the issue is for new members because the lingo can be intimidating and cause confusion for new members. Choosing to eliminate common language challenges can make an improvement to the group productivity and relationships. So, words hold immense weight in life that can determine the success or failure of a person or people.

The purpose of this assignment is to be in the role of an amateur researcher, coming up with a research question, and making decisions regarding what they are going to measure and how they are going to do it. Please provide complete answers to the following questions.

Answers should be single spaced, typed in 12pt Times New Roman, and no more than 2 pages.

1. What is your research question?

Is there a difference between neighborhoods where officer-involved shootings occur and neighborhoods where they do not occur in terms of their level of social disorganization (measured as 0-100)? In other words, are officer-involved shootings more likely to occur in neighborhoods that are socially disorganized?

2. Why did you choose this research question?

Officer-involved shootings have become a highly discussed topic in the aftermath of various high-profile killings of men of color. Understanding if a difference exists in the locations where these shootings occur, and where they do not, are important considerations in the officer’s decision to shoot. Places with high levels of social disorganization may lead an officer to be more likely to shoot (for several reasons that we will be unable to control for), whereas places with lower levels may make it less likely.

3. Describe the dependent variable and the independent variable.

Dependent Variable – The level of social disorganization, ratio, continuous

Independent Variable – Census tracts, nominal, two categories

1. those that have experienced an OIS event,

2. those that have not experienced an OIS event.

4. State the appropriate statistical test and explain why:

For my analysis, an independent sample t-test is appropriate because my independent variable is categorical and my dependent variable is continuous, and I am comparing two groups within the same variable.

5. State the null and alternative hypotheses:

H0: There is no difference between census tracts level of social disorganization based on if the census tract experienced an OIS event or not.

H1: There is a difference between census tracts which have experienced an OIS event and those that have not.

6. Are there any other variables that you think will be related to the outcome? Describe at least 3 and explain why they are relevant.

1) Characteristics of police officers (sex, age, race, how many, etc.): Some officers may be less likely to use lethal force and controlling for that will lead to a stronger outcome.

2) Characteristics of suspects (sex, age, race, how many, did they have a weapon, etc.): Some characteristics of suspects may make officers more likely to shoot, whether they are legal factors or extra-legal factors.

3) Levels of firearm violence per neighborhood: neighborhoods which are at increased risk for firearm violence may make police more likely to perceive danger and shoot.

7. What dataset(s) would you use for your study? (provide link if it exists):

My data would have to include location information for OIS events so they can be attributed to a specific census tract. OIS data is available as a dataset open for public use located at https://www.opendataphilly.org/dataset/shooting-victims. Additionally, I will need social data on neighborhoods to examine social disorganization. Neighborhood data is freely accessible to the public from the US Census located at https://www.census.gov/data.html.

Case Study #3 Final Project

BMGT 364

Mike Davis worked for one of the big outdoor sporting goods stores for more than seven years.  Although he never completed his degree, Mike took some management courses at the local community college.  The knowledge he gained from his coursework along with his own tenacity enabled him to rise into entry-level management. Although Mike enjoyed his job, he couldn’t help wondering if there was more to life.  Mike always wanted to open his own business because he wanted to be his own boss and thought he might be able to earn a decent living.

Recently, retired from a career with the school system as a PE teacher and sports coach, Mike’s Aunt Daisy was looking to fulfill her dream of having an outdoor adventure business.  She had inherited some property years back but had not done anything with the land to this point. When Aunt Daisy learned that Mike was thinking along the same lines, she determined it was time to start a business.  The two decided to go into business together and brought in Mike’s younger brother, Ethan, who was working part-time as an athletic trainer. The trio combined their savings and started hashing out a plan to use the five acres of land that Aunt Daisy had inherited.

The concept was simple…to open a business where teenagers, young adults, and work teams from local businesses could enjoy hours of outdoor fun and entertainment.  There was limited sports and entertainment for the target audience so the family decided to open a themed outdoor paint ball park, which they called Outdoor Adventure Paintball Park.  Outdoor Adventure offers customers a choice of five battlefields, each offering a different level of play.

Each field provides a unique experience for hours of enjoyment.  There is the civil war field with a simulated headquarters and trenches; an old castle, which is made of multiple levels and a tower; the woods, which offers a true woodsy battle with placement of several man-made buildings for additional cover; the village, which is a large field with a wooded section running down one side, a two story building and bunkers in the middle, with a creek running down the other side; and the hill, which contains a wooded section and a number of bunkers on a steep incline. A small store is strategically placed in a location central to the fields to eliminate the need for guests to leave the playing area.

The costs to customers vary, with rental packages starting at $25 per person. Customers may also purchase a la carte based on their individual needs. Additionally, season passes are available for a cost of $150 and birthday party packages are available for $300.  The minimum age to participate in a paint ball event is 10 years.

In addition to the five battle fields, there are six air ball fields that are formatted for 3, 5 and 7-man tournament play.  Air ball fields offer a variety of layouts that are constantly changed to keep up with the latest craze in tournament play.  Many of the fields have dedicated fill stations to eliminate the need for players to leave the field to reload.

The facility also includes a shooting gallery designed to allow individuals to sharpen their shooting skills.  The gallery contains high velocity paint guns and a variety of still and moving targets.  Players may practice aiming, have shootouts or just blast away at targets for sheer enjoyment.

Mike manages the business and spends most of his time in his office with the door closed, Ethan trains new employees and supervises paint ball events, and Aunt Daisy has oversight of the shooting gallery. The business started with three employees but has grown quickly to a staff of 20.

The venture seemed like a good idea.  The family’s passion for sports and working with youth appeared to be paying off.  There are loyal repeat customers who purchase expensive equipment and supplies from Ethan. These customers also enjoy attending extra training and information sessions. The tournaments have become popular and the local news has been covering the events.  Moreover, the business has a reputation for being a safe family friendly environment.

However, recently, Outdoor Adventure has been experiencing growing pains.  Scheduling is becoming more challenging as the activities on the field increase.  Staff is pulled from one area of the park to provide coverage in another.  Employees are starting to complain that they do not understand their job duties outside of the paint ball fields and feel they need additional training and procedures.  Additionally, a major event was missed due to double-booking.  A number of customers have expressed their displeasure with the service and, as a result, spending less time on the field.  Local businesses are not responding to special discounts for employee events.  There has been an increase in workplace mistakes but fortunately these have not resulted in serious accidents.  Customers and employees are starting to question the leadership and often ask, “How long can a business like this one last?” or “Who’s running the show?”

Mike has noticed a dip in sales and is now starting to feel they are losing control of the business.  While the two closest competitors are 30 – 45 miles away and do not offer nearly the same amenities, Mike understands that if they do not do something quickly, their customer base may decide travel to the competition.  Moreover, his passion for owning a sports-oriented business is waning.  He is concerned about the continued success of the business but the work no longer seems fun or interesting.

Aunt Daisy, on the other hand, is not interested in discussing the books and does not see any need to worry.  She is not concerned about what Mike calls “a few random incidents” and sees the dip in sales as an indication that it would be a good idea to expand the offering.  In fact, she has been presented with the possibility of forming a paint ball competing team.  She feels this opportunity is too big to pass up and wants to convince the others that it’s a good time to pursue.
