Greetings everyone!

For our second week discussion I have chosen to talk about the dermis, its functions, its layers, the papilla, and the hypodermis. Before I begin, I feel it is important to mention some interesting facts about our skin. At the beginning of chapter 6 our textbook mentions that our skin it is the largest organ of our bodies and its responsible for sensation, vitamin D synthesis, functions as a barrier against many potentially harmful substances, and it is also responsible for thermoregulation (Saladin, 2018). Therefore, in my opinion we should take good care of our skin since it is the largest barrier we have against infection.

            While I was researching for my post, I came across a very interesting journal that in my opinion was easy to read and understand. The dermis is a thick layer of connective tissue located just below the epidermis and above the subcutaneous layer (Smith, Y., 2019).  The dermis is the thickest layer of the skin and it is responsible for thermoregulation, sensation, and protection.  It is also made of fibrous and elastic tissue which provide strength and flexibility to the skin (Smith, Y., 2019).

The dermis contains collagen, elastin fibers, nerves, glands, and hair follicles. According to our text the dermis is divided into two other layers call the papillary layer and the reticular layer (Saladin, 2018).  Smith, Y. mentions that the papillary layer is the more superficial of the two layers and that it is made of loose connective tissue such as capillaries, elastic fibers, reticular fibers, and collagen (2019).  She also states that the reticular layer is deeper, thicker, and contains dense connective tissue such as blood vessels, elastic fibers (interlaced), collagen fibers (in parallel), fibroblast, mast cells, nerve endings, and lymphatics (2019).

Our text defines dermal papillae as the boundary between the epidermis and the dermis. It describes the dermal papillae as usually wavy upward waves finger like extensions of the dermis (Saladin, 2018).  Our text also talks about the Hypodermis and it describe it as a layer beneath the skin or subcutaneous tissue (Saladin, 2018).  The Hypodermis contains mostly adipose tissue and sweat glands. The adipose tissue it is responsible for production of vitamin D, and triglycerides. The subcutaneous fat also serves as an energy reservoir and thermal isolation. Children and old people have less subcutaneous fat, so they tend to be more sensitive to cold weather (Saladin, 2018).

This course is designed to help you develop as a competent and professional speaker. The speeches you complete for this course should reflect professional dispositions. Here are a few expectations for your speeches:

1. The speech should be given in an environment free from distractions and noise. Having a TV on in the background, or hearing dogs barking, is distracting to the viewer, and doesn’t reflect positively on the speaker. The lighting in the room should be bright enough that the speaker is clearly visible, and care should be taken to not “backlight” the speaker.
2. The speaker should be in a standing position. Sitting or lying down are not acceptable positions in this course.
3. The camera should be positioned far enough away that the viewer can see most of the speaker’s body. Because non-verbal cues, gestures, and body position is an important part of speaking, it is critical that those aspects are visible in the speech.
4. The camera should be in a stationary, stable position. Placing it on a solid surface that isn’t prone to movement is best.
5. While the speaker may utilize cards or other devices during the speech, it is critical to engage and maintain eye contact with the audience.

Practice Speech 2: Presentational Speaking Overview

Assignment Overview 

This speech offers you the opportunity to combine speaking skills with giving a slide presentation. You will research a topic related to nonverbal communication in speaking, and present that research in a narrated slides presentation.

Assignment Instructions

1. Select a specific topic to research and present in the field of nonverbal communication.
   • Sample topics include: using gestures effectively, moving around purposefully during presentations, or the importance of eye contact. 
2. Research this topic from at least 2 academic sources, and present the findings of the research in a 6–8 slide presentation (using Google Slides, PowerPoint, Prezi, etc.)
3. Record yourself delivering the presentation, you must appear with the presentation on the recording. The presentation must be large enough so that it can be seen on the screen. A recording of your voice alone, narrating the slides, is not acceptable. There are a number of ways you can appear with your presentation in the recording. Here are a few options:
   1. Split-screen presentation: In this option, the presentation is on one portion of the screen, and the presenter is viewed on another portion of the screen. This option is optimal, as it highlights both the presentation and the speaker. Programs that have a split-screen option are newer versions of PowerPoint and the free resource Screencast-O-Matic(opens in a new window).

   2. Project the presentation onto a large, blank surface, so that it is readable to the viewer. The speaker can stand alongside the screen and present.
   3. Use a large TV as the computer “monitor”.

   • This speech does not require an audience.
   • Submit your speech outline and the link to your uploaded speech video on YouTube® by the assigned deadline on the assignment submission page.

Assignment Requirements

1. The slide presentation should contain 6–8 slides, including a title and reference slide.
   • Any academic research referenced within the presentation should include an in-text citation, as well as an entry on the reference slide.
   • The presentation must use at least 2 academic resources within the presentation.
   • As reflected in chapter 13 of the text concerning visual aids, the slide presentation should include a mix of text and images/visual aids, and be pleasing to the eye (no dark color text on dark background, text that extends past the slide’s borders, etc.).
   • Slide text should be organized and cogent, focusing on main points rather than paragraphs of text.
2. The speech that accompanies the slides should be original, and reflect best practices in speaking.
   • You, as the speaker, should appear professional and authoritative on the subject.
   • You should appear simultaneously with the slides presentation. Using a SplitScreen format (through PowerPoint or Screencast-O-Matic) is the best way to accomplish this objective, although other options are available. Please contact your instructor for options that will best suit your situation.
   • The text of the speech should build upon the main points on the slides, and not merely read the slides to the audience.
   • The speech should be approximately 5–7 minutes long.
   • You will be assessed on the slide presentation itself, as well as the delivery of the speech

Fake news
 

Fake news is so common that we overlook it every day. It can be found on every news channel and in every newspaper. It is a sly act created by reporters and politicians to sway the minds of blind followers and uneducated viewers. In fact, there are hardly any politicians that have not used or have been involved in forms of fake news to get votes or publicity. Reporters are so persuasive in ways that make us believe that whatever they say is true. Often times with enough convincing, they believe their own stories. Online fact checkers attempt to prove against the fake news, but it is often that they don’t even see through the lies. No matter what happens, fake news will always be lingering where we least expect it.
 

In some ways, I feel as though this is clear. But like anything, my explanation can be debated. Especially since this is one of the most debated topics of our time.

I just want to start off by saying I very strongly believe that the Earth is round. Science is has come too far for people to have a question on the shape of our planet. Not only have we had people in space before, but we have a generalized map of other planets, the solar system and the entire galaxy. To be able to identify structures that are many many light years away, identifying the shape of the Earth is like child’s play compared to all of that. The rotation of our planet on its axis is what creates Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring. So for someone to say they think the Earth if flat, they must also think our 4 seasons don’t exist. At that point they should ask themselves how meteorologist are able to predict weather patterns the way they do?

This leads me into earthquakes and tsunamis. Earthquakes are caused by the movement of tectonic plates on the Earth’s crust. The overlap of these plates causes an elevated mountain-like figure in the crust and causing a ripple effect, thus creating the shake we feel in earthquakes. Tsunamis are a very similar phenomenon except it occurs below sea level and the shifting of plates causes monumental waves that crash down on our coastlines. 

To tie these two concepts together, lets create a scenario where California has an earthquakes near their coastline. The Pacific Ocean is the body of water between California and Asia, more specifically the Philippines. After the earthquake a week or so later the Asian Islands show to have larger waves than normal on their beaches. This goes to show the earth is infact round because the fault lines are all intertwined in a spherical manner.
