This week we studied nutrition, making healthy food and portion choices, and managing stress effectively.

For your Unit 4 Complete assignment, write a narrative essay (minimum of 1000 words) in which you address and discuss the questions and statements listed below.  Use at least three scholarly sources and remember to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the READ and ATTEND sections in your essay.  Please make sure to cite your sources in APA format. 

• After perusing the information on choosemyplate.gov, describe in detail how your diet compares to the USDA dietary guidelines and explain if you feel as if you would or would not benefit from utilizing the tools designed to evaluate and track the quality of your diet over time with the MyPlate website.
• In his book, Mindless Eating, Dr. Brian Wansink presents a somewhat different approach to eating.   Based on his research, Dr. Wansink contends that subtle and almost imperceptible cues and prompts in our day contribute to a tendency to overeat.  His research on labels and containers led to the development of the 100-calorie snack packages.  He also advocates for eating with smaller plates and drinking from taller glasses since it tricks our minds into thinking that we ate or drank more than we did.  By better understanding cues that lead us to eat, we can set habits and environments that help us to eat less.  Rather than changing the foods we eat, the method of “mindless eating” focuses on how we can modify our perceptions of food to regulate intake.  Take a closer look at Mindless Eating on the internet to better understand the ideas.  Discuss whether you think this is a novel approach or just another fad diet and explain if you do or do not believe that this mental approach to weight control would help you better regulate your weight.
• The recent “Stress in America” report from the American Psychological Association provides insights about patterns and trends in stress.  Although sources and consequences of stress are similar for men and women, there are many key differences in how each gender reports and perceives stress.  Visit the StressinAmerca.org website to take a closer look at stress patterns and trends.  Discuss any interesting patterns or relationships you observe for gender, region, or generation.  Then describe and explain if you are or are not surprised that there are gender, age, or generational differences in stress ratings. 

Discussion 1: Patients’ Perception About Religion and Spirituality

Religion and spirituality are complex constructs that have the capacity to influence patients’ illnesses, courses of treatment, and experiences. Medical social workers may feel unsure of how to address patients’ religious beliefs. Despite knowledge about the benefits of medications and treatment in illness management, social workers may hear patient comments such as, “I don’t need medicine. God is going to heal me.” In situations of conflicting ideas, it is important for medical social workers to consider the standards and tenets that govern the profession. Medical social workers must listen, not judge, and promote a patient’s self-determination. In addition, they must accept that they may not be able to address a patient’s religious or spiritual needs and call upon colleagues such as pastors, priests, imams, and rabbis who are more qualified in these areas

Posture can be best described as the position your body hold when in a sitting or standing position. Muscles are responsible for maintaining posture and stability.  Muscle keep up standing up straight, and prevent any slumping or falling over, Hence sometimes being called “anti gravity muscles” . A variety of muscle groups such as the hamstring, large muscles in one’s back are vital in one’s posture.  The “neutral spine” is he most common term when speaking of posture. This standing with a straight neck, level shoulder and feet directly below the hips. 

Inactive posture is when someone is sleeping or resting, this usually requires little to no muscle activity.When just standing straight up the intrinsic muscles in the feet are not really active because other ligaments are there for support. The soleus,which is a a strong muscle that goes from the back of the knee down to the ankle keeps the body sturdy as gravity pulls the body over the feet. The iliopsoas is also always engaged as  this is a joint that connects the lower part of the body and the trunk of the body. The gluteus medius and erector spinae is also active in counteracting gravity. 

In contrast, active posture requires the action of a variety of muscles in order to work.  Active posture can be broken down into two categories:

Static Posture: Is any form of standing, sitting, lying, or kneeling. In this the the body is aligned and in a standard position and muscle groups are working to counteract the forces of gravity.

Dynamic Postures: Is any form of movement such as walking, running, jumping, throwing, and lifting. 

 Stability of the body starts with the spine. The spine is fully equipped with support structures and muscles that include joints to relieve the tension and stiffness o the spine. The muscles are also equipped with a nervous systems that signals the necessary information needed to provide stability and support. So when we practice good posture we are giving our joints the chance to be aligned which gives us good structure an stability.
