 Hi. This is just a reminder that your term paper is due on 11/27. Please don’t forget it and please don’t wait to write it at the last minute. This one carries a lot of weight in your total course score. You’ll need to thoroughly explain Deontological Ethics and Utilitarianism and explicitly apply both the categorical imperative and the hedonistic calculus. Please don’t wait!
 

Term Paper or Film Assignment

You may either write a paper or film yourself explaining your resolution to the moral dilemma. Both papers and films must meet the following criteria.

The Term Paper or video that you create is Due on November 25 at 11 pm.

Introduction to the Short Reading for the Term Paper

For your term paper, you’ll need to read at least the first two chapters of Jon Ronson’s book, “So You’ve been Publicly Shamed.” Your paper centers around the scenario described in Chapter 2, between Jonah Lehrer and Michael Moynihan. If you do some research, you’ll find several videos, interviews and articles about this dilemma, and, with proper citations, you are welcome to bring that information into your term paper assignment. However, no research is necessary whatsoever. You can write your term paper based solely upon the information provided in Chapter 2 of Jon Ronson’s book. In fact, there is a danger involved with doing further research and that is that you may find a lot of extraneous information that you feel compelled to bring into your term paper that actually distracts you from the purpose/focus of the term paper itself and you’ll be graded based upon the purpose/focus of the term paper as found in the grading rubric below. My advice–and I feel like Willy Wonka when I write this because Veruka still turns into a blueberry despite my protestations—is not to do any research until after you submit the term paper. This book will make you want to look up the actual videos and interviews. It is a train wreck.

What do you need to do for this assignment?

Papers must be typed, double spaced, size 12 font and no more than 3 pages in length. Films must be a maximum of 5 minutes long. You will not be graded based upon grammar, punctuation, oral presentation skills but you will be graded based upon the ideas communicated.

Grading Rubric for Formal Essay or film:

• Content and Development: Content of the paper is thorough, complete, deep and informed by the semester’s course material and by the reading from the first two chapters of “So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed.” 
• Papers are between 3 pages maximum and Films are no longer than five minutes in length.

Grading Rubric for Formal Essay or Video Submission

**While the lower row of the grading rubric addresses issues of paper construction (Paper structure, sentence construction, grammar, spelling, etc.) this class has no content, prerequisites or corequisites for paper writing. Since this is the case, the bottom row of the grading rubic will not affect your grade. I may, as your instructor, provide some notes regarding paper structure, grammar, and spelling but these notes are merely coaching for future classes. I want you to be successful not only in my class but also in your overall academic goals. The same grading rubric will be used for grading video submissions making the necessary adjustments from written to oral work.

As healthcare providers, we look more and more to technology to improve patient outcomes, streamline operations, and lower costs. Sometimes, technology can be used in ways that have ethical, moral, and legal considerations too. You will be writing about the use of personal devices and social media and its use in healthcare. We can do it, but dare we?

With this very important distinction, how is their recent use of celebrity endorsers risky for their brand identity? As demonstrated in this case, the use of celebrity endorsers can be risky for brand identity. Describe another brand that experienced some level of fallout with the use of a celebrity or sports figure as their endorser. What was the ultimate result? Companies often use well known celebrities or athletes to market their products in hopes of inspiring consumers to achieve the level of status or recognition of those professionals by buying or being seen with the products they advertise. While many times this works well and is a boost for the company it is also risky as that product is forever tied to an individual and runs the risk of falling victim when the endorsers land in the middle of controversy.

For Louis Vuitton, I don’t think that controversy or negative publicity necessarily caused fallout for the brand, but I would certainly believe that they took some risk in using personalities like Michael Phelps or Buzz Aldrin or are not typically associated with the level of luxury that the brand desires to portray. The recent endorsers seem to be a shift from those that came before them like Madonna or Audrey Hepburn.

Oakley is an example of company that once used Lance Armstrong and Oscar Pistorius to sell their famous eyewear to runners and cyclists who wanted to be as fast as the Olympian and Tour de France champion. In 2012/2013 the company decided to terminate their relationships with these athletes in light of the doping scandal by Armostrong and Pistorius’ murder accusation and later conviction. While the situations are unsettling and reach far beyond a product endorsement, it certainly was not the positive media attention that Oakely would have hoped for when they agreed to pay the athletes to represent their brand. In the end, Oakley is still a leader in their industry and continues to provide all kinds of athletes with apparel and eyewear designed for the athlete. They may have lost a handful of customers that find it hard to get past the ties that Oakley once had with Armstrong or Pistorius, but I would think that a majority of the population understands that Oakley was not responsible for the actions of these two professionals and consumers will continue to support the company if their products are right for them.
