Each student will create a 5-6-minute PowerPoint presentation on their chosen subject and post it to the Discussion Board.  Since you will not be presenting these in front of the class, you will need to record the presentation.  This is very easy to do within the PowerPoint program.  When you open the program, and scroll across the top, you will see “Slide Show”.  When you click on that, there is a button “Record Slide Show”.  You can record with audio only, no video, if you wish.  That is up to you.   However, you will need to create the PowerPoint presentation first and then record it.  I also strongly recommend you write a “script” for your presentation.  It makes a big difference in the presentation.

 A.  Chose an important leader in the field of your career choice or the area you want to specialize, i.e. personal training, coaching, strength & conditioning, P.T., O.T., chiropractic, therapeutic recreation, etc. Explain how they have influenced the field or what impact they have had in the field.

B.  Chose a treatment, training, or trend and explain how it has impacted the field in which it is utilized.  It must be related to health and fitness sciences.

Creating your presentation:1.  Dig deep – Although your material is limited to a six-minute presentation, you will still need to do enough research to understand your topic and extract the essence of your talk.

2.  Keep it simple – Once you have the materials, narrow down your topic to one core concept. As stated by Chip and Dan Heath, authors of Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die state, “How do we find the essential core of our ideas? To strip an idea down to its core, we must be masters of exclusion.” It’s all about just one idea.

3.  Practice, practice, practice – Rehearsal is critical for a such a short presentation. You have no time to pause or collect your thoughts. To engage your listeners, you will need to be smooth and steady, not bumbling.

4.  Lead with wow – During a five-minute presentation you have little time to build a case or draw your audience in. The best approach is to lead with a compelling or controversial position. Make them think right of the bat.

5.  Tell a story – A presentation full of facts, figures and statistics will quickly lose your audience. One stat may be fine to reinforce a point, but if you want to create a memorable presentation tell a memorable story.

 Predicting Delayed Flights. The file FlightDelays.xls contains information on all commercial flights departing the Washington, D.C., area and arriving at New York during January 2004. For each flight there is information on the departure and arrival airports, the distance of the route, the scheduled time and date of the flight, and so on. The variable that we are trying to predict is whether or not a flight is delayed. A delay is defined as an arrival that is at least 15 minutes later than scheduled. Data Preprocessing. Create dummies for day of week, carrier, departure airport, and arrival airport. This will give you 17 dummies. Bin the scheduled departure time into 2-hour bins (in XLMiner use Data Utilities > Bin Continuous Data and select 8 bins with equal width). After binning DEP_TIME into 8 bins, this new variable should be broken down into 7 dummies (because the effect will not be linear due to the morning and afternoon rush hours). This will avoid treating the departure time as a continuous predictor because it is reasonable that delays are related to rush-hour times. Partition the data into training and validation sets. Fit a classification tree to the flight delay variable using all the relevant predictors. Do not include DEP_TIME (actual departure time) in the model because it is unknown at the time of prediction (unless we are doing our predicting of delays after the plane takes off, which is unlikely). In the third step of the classification tree menu, choose “Maximum # levels to be displayed = 6”. Use the best pruned tree without a limitation on the minimum number of observations in the final nodes. Express the resulting tree as a set of rules. If you needed to fly between DCA and EWR on a Monday at 7 AM, would you be able to use this tree? What other information would you need? Is it available in practice? What information is redundant? Fit another tree, this time excluding the day-of-month predictor. (Why?) Select the option of seeing both the full tree and the best pruned tree. You will find that the best pruned tree contains a single terminal node. How is this tree used for classification? (What is the rule for classifying?) To what is this rule equivalent? Examine the full tree. What are the top three predictors according to this tree? Why, technically, does the pruned tree result in a tree with a single node? What is the disadvantage of using the top levels of the full tree as opposed to the best pruned tree?

• Evaluate the healthcare organization’s mission statement based on researched evaluation criteria. What components does the mission statement contain? Lack? What recommendation would you offer to improve the mission statement?
