Stem cells are the basis for every organ and tissue in our bodies. We continually rely on stem cells to replace and rejuvenate tissues lost every day, such as hair, blood, and skin. Currently researchers in this exciting field are working with patients suffering from a host of diseases and conditions that do not respond well to other therapies. These experimental procedures are termed “clinical trials” and are used to begin the study of how the human body responds to stem cell treatment. Early research is often done with laboratory animals, but success with animals does not always translate well into that same level of success with humans. Further research must be done to test both the safety and efficacy of the treatment for human patients before the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) can approve the therapy.

PUBLIC HEALTH

There will be 2 components towards your grade when you directly participate in your debate:

(1) Group presentation (100 points): For this part of the assignment, you and your team will be graded on your knowledge and presentation. The structure and points to cover will be explained in more detail for each panel. The presentation will be in a PowerPoint format and uploaded for the class to see. Each group will upload one joint PowerPoint presentation file. You will be graded as a group; however, each student will be given the opportunity to evaluate the performance of each member of the group using an evaluation tool provided by the instructor. Hence, these within-group peer evaluations can be used to help determine an individual student’s group presentation grade.

(2) Written assignment (100 Points): For this part of the assignment, each student in the group will independently prepare and submit approximately a 5-6 page, 11 font double-spaced word essay describing support for their assigned stance ‘pro’ or ‘con’ with at least 5 reputable sources (see format below), such as data gathered from PubMed, Web of Science, or governmental agencies. You cannot support your claim with public discussion sources or material that is opinion based. You can present situations regarding public opinion with reliable sources or describe events (protesting etc.), but these stories will not count as your 5 major sources. You can work with your group to gather information but the paper is to be independently written by each student and reflect all the information researched to support your stance. The last paragraph will be an opportunity to describe whether you personally agree or disagree with the stance that you defended and why. This assignment will be due on the day of your presentation.

Any cost that a health care manager can authorize or directly influence is a controllable cost. Examples of non-controllable costs for the business include: taxes, interest, costs mandated in the fulfillment of contracts, costs of having the buildings ADA accessible, costs associated with complying with all minimum standards for habitation and use of buildings, costs associated with purchasing and maintaining every piece of equipment required for contracts, and costs associated with complying with mandated safety levels. Virtually every other expense the health care manager can influence the amount of the expense by controlling the level of the activity.

The Case Study assignments from previous weeks have prepared you for this week’s final component of your project. In Week 2 you submitted an introductory paragraph about your chosen individual and found an article in the Walden library to support your analysis of that person. In Week 3 you built upon that work by applying the course topics of Brain and Behavior; Sensation and Perception, and Learning and Memory to begin developing your complete analysis of your chosen individual. You are now ready for the final phase of your case study project.

By Day 7

This week you will submit your Final Project for grading. Your final project should be 5 to 8 pages of text (not including the title page and reference page) that includes:

1. The introduction and summary of your chosen individual that you submitted in Week 2.
2. The application of relevant concepts from all major course topics to your chosen individual.
