Each student should find a print advertisement or commercial to complete a rhetorical analysis. Be careful in choosing an ad for this assignment. There are many options, obviously, but make sure that the ad you choose allows for thorough rhetorical analysis. The key will be to find an ad that has a purpose and/or ‘message’, that potentially influences or affects the audience, that provides ample evidence, and that allows you to make claims or assertions about ‘what it is saying’ and its effectiveness. Each essay will need to describe/summarize the ad (what’s on the surface), identify a target audience, analyze the purpose of the ad, and consider the potential impact on the audience.
