In not less than 200 words

Investigate the history of coding and identify the purpose of the ICD coding system. What is the significance of its use? What brought about the change from ICD-9 to ICD-10 and how does the ICD-10 system affect the organization and the consumer? What systematic changes do you foresee in the next 10–20 years?

In two different paragraph with not less than 75 words each give your personal opinion to  Michelle Miller   and  Felita Daniel-sacagiu

The International Classification of Diseases (ICD) is a method of classifying diseases that dates to the 1600s by John Graunt in England. He developed it to classify deaths. It was established to determine the proportion of children who died prior to the age of 6. In the mid-1800’s William Farr, a medical statistician used the methodology to classify diseases for the General Register Office of England and Wales. Farr’s new method arranged diseases into five groups: epidemic, general, local according to anatomical site, developmental, and injuries as a result of violence. This method evolved into an international effort that developed into the ICD-9 and ICD-10 diagnosis codes used today.

The International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Edition (ICD-10 codes) was developed and finalized in October 2015 to offer more classification options than the previous classification ICD-9 system. The ICD-10 offers improved mapping, multilingual vocabulary of clinical terminology, and can enable computer-assisted coding that supports improved data, accuracy, efficiency, and consistent coding. The ICD-10 codes also provide specific information about how a healthcare provider approached a medical procedure and what medical equipment was used.

How does the system affect the consumer and organization?

  • Offers improved data and improved patient service quality, safety, and effectiveness
  • Allows for more accurate payment for new procedures
  • There are fewer rejected claims, fraudulent claims
  • Improved understanding of new procedures and disease management
  • Provides more details about the patient’s condition
  • Offers status on injuries and disease progression and/or recovery

What systematic changes do I foresee in the next 10-20 years? I believe the codes will continue to evolve to keep with up with the many changes in our healthcare system. New germs and diseases are being discovered (ex. COVID-19) and the system will need to develop in order to maintain and improve systematically. The system must continue to collect data so that it can support the clinical needs of modern-day healthcare providers.

According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, International Classification Disease (ICD), in medicine, diagnostic tool that is used to classify and monitor causes of injury and death and that maintains information for health analyses, such as the study of mortality (death) and morbidity (illness) trends.  The ICD is designed to promote international compatibility in health data collecting and reporting. The International Statistical Institute adopted the first international classification of diseases in 1893.  The system was based on the Bertillon Classification of Causes of Death, developed by French statistician and demographer Jacques Bertillon.

International Classification of Diseases (ICD) are codes found in the paperwork for patients in the healthcare industry. ICD is widely used in public health.  ICD is very significant in healthcare.  ICD was established by the World Health Organization.  One of the advantages or using ICD is that healthcare personnel can use fewer codes.  ICD was created to standardize medical records.  Basically, the ICD scheme follows a common nomenclator.  Systematic changes I see is the next 10-20 years is personnel.  In the next 10-20 years, there would be systems updates as well as making tremendous technological advances.  It will be difficult for the healthcare industry to maintain well trained personnel to keep up with the ICD database. Coding personnel is limited.  There will be constant updates to the ICD protocol.
