Understanding competition and how similar products / processes work is key element is in brainstorming potential solutions. Aim is to give a fair view of who you are competing against. Explain your competitors’ positioning and describe their strengths and weaknesses. Ask yourself following:

1. What is target market for your product / process?

2. Define market need. Why is your product / process necessary?

3. What are strengths of competitive products?

4. What are weaknesses of competitive products?

5. Are there barriers to entering market with your product or competition?

6. How fast does the market turnover in terms of new product introduction?

Each person on the team research at least one product / process that performs similar functions to yours. For each product/process, write 1 paragraph on answering the above questions. Come together at a team meeting and present your ideas to everyone else in the group. Present your research with your peers. One way to carry the analysis is to benchmark your competitor against each of key drivers of demand for your market (price, quality, add-on services, etc.) and present results in a table.
