The musics of Oceania, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and East Asia are incredibly diverse in each geographic area, yet after studying these geographic areas and their musical traditions, we find that they also have very much in common. One of the most important points of commonality and departure are their tonal systems. Please compare and contrast two or three (but no more than three) musical traditions from throughout the East focusing on their tonal systems. For example, what can you tell us about their relative simplicity or complexity? How do they sound to you? How have Eastern tonalities influenced Western tonality?
