the-gdp-still-accurate-in-the-digital-age

s the GDP Still Accurate in the Digital Age?”

What the GDP measures, if anything, has become quite the issue in the digital age. Consider this data:

In 2012, U.S. Real GDP was $15,345.63 billion and Real Per Capita GDP was $48,842 billion.

Five years later, at the end of 2017, U.S. Real GDP was $17,096.18 billion and Real Per Capita GDP was $52,446 billion. (All data was extracted May 20, 2018, from FRED https://fred.stlouisfed.org/.)

Read this blog, GDP: Falling Short, to help you answer this week’s discussion questions.

Reply to these questions in your response:

  • Considering the data above, did the U.S. make progress? Explain your answer.
  • Given what you know now about economics, should the measure of GDP be changed? Why or why not?

All publicly traded organizations are required to file an annual report, called a Form 10-K, with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). These forms provide information such as the company’s mission statement, history, executive officers and their executive compensation, and various financial statements. Form 10-Ks are required to be made public and, as such, are easily accessible via Internet searches. A quick search will find 10-Ks for organizations such as Google, the Coca-Cola Company, or the Target Corporation.

Think about a publicly traded organization in an industry that you are employed in or in which you are interested. Either by conducting an Internet search or by using the “Public Company Search” feature located at http://investing.businessweek.com/research/common/…, locate the 10-K of an organization of your choice.

If you decide to use the organization you selected in Week 1, proceed to the Discussion below. If you have chosen to identify a new organization, follow the steps below, then proceed to the Discussion:

  • First, run a search for your company by name, being sure to select the region of the world in which it operates from the drop-down menu.
  • Select the correct company from the list of results; you will be taken to a company Snapshot page.
  • The company’s SEC filings, including its 10-K, can be found either at the bottom of the Snapshot page beneath the organization’s details or on the Financials tab at the SEC Filings link.
  • Examine the sections of the 10-K detailing the organization’s mission, its executive board, its employees, and its successes and risk factors.

For this Discussion, you will then:

  • Describe and evaluate the role that you believe human capital plays in this organization.
  • Appraise whether the organization’s success at achieving its mission is at all related to the core competencies of the workforce and how it manages its human capital.
  • Based on the company’s self-assessment of risks, do you think this organization could make any changes to its HR strategy in order to become more successful or to mitigate potential risks?

1. Recall that the dataset, Stat_grades.sav, contains data for a sample of 105 statistics students. One of the variables in this dataset is called, gender. This variable is either “1” for “Female”, or “2” for “Male”.The Instructor is wondering if gender affects student performance as measured using Final Course Percentage (called Percent) .Using the appropriatestatistical test, methods, and evaluations, determine if Gendermade a significant differencein Final Course Percent. Be sure to include each step of the process, any SPSS results used, an interpretation of the results, and the final conclusions.

(a) What is the hypothesis being tested here?

(b) What are Ho and Ha?

(c) What is the name of the test you will run? Run the appropriate SPSS test and include the SPSS output here.

(d) What are the results of the test? What is the p-value and is it larger or smaller than the alpha value – show your work and explain the result.

(e) Write a conclusion for the above in plain English so that any person could understand. What can you say about gender and its effect on overall performance?

2. Based on many years of past classes and experience, the Instructor for the students in the Stat_Grades.sav dataset has determined that asuccessfulmean value for Total Pointsis 90 points. Does the Total Pointsfor the students in Stat_Grades.sav differ significantly from the known success value of 90 points? Use and include the appropriate statistical test, methods, and evaluations. Be sure to include each step of the process, any SPSS results used, an interpretation of the results, and final conclusions.

(a) What is the hypothesis being tested here?

(b) What are Ho and Ha?

(c) What is the name of the test you will run? Run the appropriate SPSS test and include the SPSS output here.

(d) What are the results of the test? What is the p-value? Compare the p value to alpha and note the result.

(e) Explain the conclusion in plain English so that any person could understand. Did the students in Stat_Grades.sav do significantly differently than the population mean of 90? How did they do and what did you find? Explain.

3. Using the Stat_Grades.sav dataset, compare Quiz 1and Quiz 2 to determine if there is a statistically significant difference in the average student performance between these two quizzes.

(e) Explain the result and conclusion of the test in plain English so that any person could understand.

4. Use the following SPSS output to answer these questions. The hypothesis here is: “Is there a significant difference in Final Exam Points between lower division students and upper division students (variable: lowup)?”

(a) What is Ho and Ha?

(b) What t-test is being used?

(c) What is the p value? (Assume equal variances)

(d) Using alpha at .05, what is the result of this test?

(e) Write the full conclusion for this test in plain English so anyone can understand.

(f) How many Lower Division students are in this sample of data? Is the mean points for lower division students different than it is for upper division students? Is it significantly different? What does it mean to be significantly different (versus just different)?
