After reading the material in your textbook and in the Unit VIII Lesson, what are some control hazards that are commonly used at workplaces with which you are familiar? If you were the safety officer at a facility with high exposures to gases and vapors, which control method from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) hierarchy of controls would you recommend as a primary control? In addition, discuss how well you feel the material presented in this course has prepared you for the workplace.

The discovery of the antibiotic Penicillin in the 1920s made a big impact on human history. Not only did it provide a cure for bacterial infections that were once deadly, but it also led to a golden age in discovery of new antibiotics. The great benefit of these drugs is that antibiotics inhibit the growth of bacterial cells or kill them outright, and yet, on the whole, do not harm eukaryotic cells.

Answer BOTH of the following questions:

1. Given the following list of antibiotics and their targets, explain how each stops bacteria without harming human cells. Base your analyses on the differences between eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells.
2. Considering the targets of these antibiotics, explain why antibiotics in general would not be useful for treating a viral infection

This course is designed to help you develop as a competent and professional speaker. The speeches you complete for this course should reflect professional dispositions. Here are a few expectations for your speeches:

1. The speech should be given in an environment free from distractions and noise. Having a TV on in the background, or hearing dogs barking, is distracting to the viewer, and doesn’t reflect positively on the speaker. The lighting in the room should be bright enough that the speaker is clearly visible, and care should be taken to not “backlight” the speaker.
2. The speaker should be in a standing position. Sitting or lying down are not acceptable positions in this course.
3. The camera should be positioned far enough away that the viewer can see most of the speaker’s body. Because non-verbal cues, gestures, and body position is an important part of speaking, it is critical that those aspects are visible in the speech.
4. The camera should be in a stationary, stable position. Placing it on a solid surface that isn’t prone to movement is best.
5. While the speaker may utilize cards or other devices during the speech, it is critical to engage and maintain eye contact with the audience.
