Eight Elements of Thought and Reasoning

There are eight elements of thought in reasoning. We often use more than one element at the same time. For example, your Point of View includes Assumptions. Therefore, we can assume that these elements are two aspects of the same thing.

For your assignment this week, first begin by analyzing eight elements of thought and reasoning and re-organize them into four distinct categories by pairing elements together.

Next, briefly describe each new category you created and present your reasoning for each category. Include the characteristics of the original eight elements in your descriptions and the reasoning behind your pairings

Below is an example of what one category may look like. You are free to pair any elements together if you can define their relationship to one another. Focus on the reasoning behind each pairing. That is what is most important in this exercise!

Category 1: How do I see it?

Point of View: The place from where I see things

Assumption: Information that is taken for granted; Preconceived notions

Explanation: I paired point of view and assumptions together in the same category because assumptions form your point of view. You cannot form a point of view without having assumptions first.

Example: My assumption is that short people are not good at basketball. My younger cousin is 5’ 3’’ and is terrible at the sport. Therefore, my point of view is that no short people can play basketball professionally.

Your completed assignment should be written primarily in first person and should be 500-750 words in length. If you use sources in your writing, be sure to identify them. If you use any direct language from a source, be sure to place those words in quotation marks.

  This assignment contains two short case studies. The first 10 questions will be related to one patient and the last 10 questions are related to a second patient. You will need to perform research to adequately answer these questions. You are encouraged to take your time, save your work, and return to this assignment as many times as needed. Write a paragraph each on Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 telling the main point and then providing 3 to 5 outstanding facts from each.

Overview: Because the money needed to operate a not-for-profit organization comes largely from private donations and public grants, spending the money wisely is a top priority. In addition, where there is money, there is the temptation to misuse it. Strong financial management and a commitment to ethics go hand-in-hand for a well-managed not-for-profit organization. 

Complete the SWOT Analysis Worksheet to assist you in evaluating the financial management practices and ethical considerations of your chosen not-for-profit organization. You will use this information to prepare your analysis. You will not submit the worksheet as part of the milestone assignment. 

Prompt: Analyze the financial management and ethical practices of the not-for-profit organization (Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) on which you will perform your strategic analysis. Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed: 

 I.  Introduction: Write an introduction to your paper that includes a hook and a controlling idea (thesis). The introduction should generate interest and let the reader know what to expect in the paper. 

 II.  Analysis:
a. Finances:

 i.  Discuss the organization’s current budgetary resources, structure, and responsibilities. 

 ii.  Discuss the organization’s current fundraising campaigns, grant possibilities, and planned giving opportunities and their impact on the overall budget. 

 iii.  Determine potential challenges to the financial operation of the organization based on your analysis of its overall financial management.

B. Ethics: 

 iv.  Discuss the organization’s handling of budget and fundraising transparency, specifically in regards to its adherence to established codes, principles, and ethics of the industry. 

 v.  Discuss ethical considerations the organization faces related to conflict of interest, privacy, and compensation. 

 vi.  Evaluate how the ethical operation of this organization has impacted its public image. 

 III.  Conclusion: Write a conclusion to your paper that summarizes the organization’s leadership strategies and communication practices. Tie the conclusion back to your controlling idea (thesis). 

Guidelines for Submission: Submit a 3- to 4-page Microsoft Word document (not including the title page or references). It should be double spaced with 12-point  Times New Roman font, one-inch margins, and APA formatting.
