Write a proposal for your argumentative essay. I want to tell me what you are going to argue. At this point, you do NOT need to have your thesis. All you need is a general idea (i.e. ” I’m going to argue that pineapple should be on pizza” or “I’m going to argue that pineapple should not be on pizza”.)

At this point, I need to know two things:

1. What conversation you are entering? Think of Burke’s party metaphor. What conversation have you wandered into? What debate is raging? Are there sides? You don’t need to go into the details about the debate. You just need to give me the general details.

2. What stance are you taking? Think of the three ways to respond as highlighted in They Say, I Say (pp. 53-66). Are you disagreeing and with whom? Are you Agreeing but with a difference and with whom? Are you Agreeing and Disagreeing simultaneously and with whom?

In the proposal, you also have to explain how you are going to argue this. Explain which of the three appeals are you going to use? Remember that you can use a combination if you choose. What kind of evidence will you use? Anecdotes? Statistics? Facts?

Remember, at this stage, you are not arguing your points. You are giving me your outline. What you are going to say and how you are going to say it.
