Hello class,
Nonverbal communication and verbal communication are the two types of communication and are both of equal importance when it comes to working in a group. Nonverbal communication is communication through forms other than verbally speaking. This can be things like facial expressions, posture, body language, and eye contact. In the context of a group, these forms of nonverbal communication can speak very loudly – almost as loud as someone could with words. For example, if someone in the group has a bad posture, isn’t making eye contact, makes upsetting facial expressions, and is closed off in their body language, you could infer that they probably don’t want to be part of the group. If someone is engaging with eye contact, opening up with their body language, and smiling, you could infer that they do. In the context of working in groups with unfamiliar people, nonverbal communication cues are crucial. Verbal communication refers to communication done through spoken words. This is primarily seen in face to face conversation in the context of groups, but not always. Verbal communication can also refer to phone and text message communication, which is the type of communication I’m using with my group in this class! The advantages of verbal communication are that everyone can communciate their thoughts directly and effectively. Speaking directly with one another saves time in group settings, rather than communicating nonverbally and hoping your group catches on to your thoughts displayed through your actions.
Personally, I feel really good about how I use nonverbal and verbal communication in the groups in my life. In my group for this class, I use verbal communciation via phone, text, and our group forum to express my thoughts regarding our work. I’ve chosen to be straight forward, as have my group members, and we haven’t had communication issues so far! In my group / team at work, we all communicate verbally and are pretty comfortable with that, but we also pick up on nonverbal cues like if we see someone acting closed off or seeming to be struggling, we check in.

Hello everyone,
Verbal and non verbal communication are ways of expressing our feelings to others. Both types of communication speaks different volumes. Non-verbal communication is the use of message components other than words to generate meaning (Engleberg, 2017). An Advantage to non-verbal communication is it adds meaning to a verbal message, like telling someone thank you with a smile. Also, information can also be easily presented through visual and silent means with non verbal communication. According to Engleberg (2017), tone of voice, directness of eye contact, and physical proximity of group members can reveal at least as much about their thoughts and feelings as the words they speak. This advantage helps to understand what those whom do not say much are feeling. Disadvantages concerning non-verbal communication is the communication is imprecise and indeterminate. Without using words, it is hard to give the direct meaning of a non-verbal cue. Another disadvantage is one can miss a cue, while focusing on a certain aspect of the communicator. Everything is happening at once and it is hard to catch everything at once. Verbal communication is the way in which the words in a language are used to generate meaning (Engleberg, 2017). Advantages of verbal communication is it is time saving and quicker to get feedback. Also, it gives a clearer understanding of communication making it a more reliable way to communicate. A disadvantage of verbal commmunication is in different cutures it is hard to understand what they are speaking of. I would improve my verbal and nonverbal communication by trying not to frown so much. I tend to frown alot, which mades people think that I am angry, (in most cases I don’t, but in other cases it is irritation). Also, trying to be more vocal where people can understand me, without me feeling timid of how they will feel. I just may help more people this way.

Verbal and non-verbal communication is inevitable during group interactions. It is how one goes about each communication style that depends if it is an advantage or disadvantage within the group. When done correctly verbal communication can strengthen one’s idea. They can use their voice to persuade and or lead the group. Verbal communication does not always go as plan though. Many times if not done carefully the meaning behind ones communication can get distorted. Due to the presence of various barriers in effective communication, it happens that the intended meaning of the message changes for the intended person which causes a lot of problems in the future (Reddy, 2019). Nonverbal communication can be just as easy and effective when done correctly. One advantage is that it can be convenient and saves time. Something as simple as starting a group chatis a great way to get in contact with a number of people within a group to relay the message that is needed at the press of a button. Unfortunately, there can be downfalls for such communication. One example is that it can come off as very vague. Many times, nonverbal communication can lack emotion which is needed at times to get the message across correctly. I know that although emotions are needed, one way I could improve my communication skills is lowering the intensity. Although I can keep composure in a professional group setting sometimes with more personal groups, I tend to let me emotions get the best of me which I consider a disadvantage

Hello,
Verbal and non-verbal communication both have positive and negative elements that affect relationships. Verbal communication is beneficial for a culture that is low-context because verbal communication is the more direct or literal form of communication between the two. Verbal also can be used through various forms such as face to face, fax to fax, email, utilizing a phone, and letter to name a few. A problem with verbal is that even though verbal is more direct, determining the intention is difficult to figure out by itself. Non-verbal communication is good for determining the intentions behind actions and words but also the feeling attached to them. The flaw with non-verbal is that it focused on the emotional element of people but deciphering non-verbal intentions can be difficult to understand at times. Overall, verbal conveys the literal thought and non-verbal conveys the intentions and feelings.
Relating to improving my verbal and non-verbal communication I have areas I am aware of that need improvement. For example, I often speak in an abstract method always having a deeper meaning and ignore basic understanding in society. I try to simplify my thoughts into a manner that is less confusing because I understand everyone does not want a riddle or deep meaning in every statement. Being mindful of this I try to match the way I convey thoughts to the person I am interacting with. For non-verbal I have a stoic face so people in the past have trouble determining my intentions behind my words and actions. Overall, there are areas that I can improve in that will help my communication, which will have a profound effect on the level of success I will achieve in the future.

Hello everyone,
Ambiguous language describes speech that doesn’t have a singular meaning , but represents different ideas, objects or individuals (Alley Dog, 2020). An example would be using the word high in a manner relating to elevation, reference for drug use, or describing someone powerful. Pronouns are also an example of ambiguous language.Using the term them is easier than saying the name of each person in the group. Ambiguous language that could cause a miscommunication in the group is using the same terms that could mean one thing to one person and another to the other person. For example, using they could mean Sally an Paul, but in reality, it is Sally Paul and George. Group members can avoid many misunderstandings by overcoming language-based obstacles to communication (Engleberg & Wynn, 2017). Being more specific when communicating to others is essential to ensure that everyone is on the same page. My language choice could lead to a breakdown of communication when referring to any ambiguous language that requires more detail.

Hello,
In language there are four common types of language challenges such as abstract words, bypassing language, jargon, and offensive language with the first three often causing miscommunication or being ambiguous. An abstract word is an idea or thought that is not tangible or that can be sensed by the five senses (Engleberg, & Wynn, 2017). The ambiguity in abstract words can cause confusion in the group because the intention of the speaker and the perception of the audience may not always align. Bypassing language is a miscommunication that occurs when two parties have different meanings for the same word (Engleberg, & Wynn, 2017). Bypassing miscommunications can cause misunderstandings between parties that can hinder the progress of a group. Jargon is a shorthand that allows people to convey thought in a concise and short method but the problem is that jargon is something learned over time but it can be confusing or ambiguous to newcomers (Engleberg, & Wynn, 2017). There are benefits to jargon in an established group but the issue is for new members because the lingo can be intimidating and cause confusion for new members. Choosing to eliminate common language challenges can make an improvement to the group productivity and relationships. So, words hold immense weight in life that can determine the success or failure of a person or people.
