just anwser the following questions
Lots of difficult reading for this week (yay! you’re all sharpening your reading skills, you can thank me later). Please bring a hard copy with you to class on Thursday.
1. From Beckert’s Slavery’s Capitalism, ch. 3 “An International Harvest: The Second Slavery, the Virginia-Brazil Connection, and the Development of the McCormick Reaper,” by Daniel B. Rood, when did McCormick invent his reaper, what did it do, how did it influence the relationship between Virginia and Brazil, and what does Rood mean by “the second slavery.” Make sure to provide quotes as you answer these questions. Use the following to footnote properly (change to the actual pages you use!):
Daniel Rood, “An International Harvest,” in Slavery’s Capitalism: A New History of American Economic Development, eds. Sven Beckert and Seth Rothman (Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press), 92-93.
2. From ch. 9, ” ‘No country but but their counting houses,’ ” explain the following two quotes (you have to read the entire article to do so), the opening quote by John Quincy Adams (re-type it then spend at least two paragraphs explaining it) and the opening sentence following that quote “Cuban slavery impacted early American slavery through Russia” (you’ll need at least three full paragraphs to explain this one).
When you cite, use the following with your page numbers instead of mine:
Stephen Chambers, “‘No country but their counting houses’: the U.S.-Cuba-Baltic Circuit, 1809-1812,” in Slavery’s Capitalism: A New History of American Economic Development, eds. Sven Beckert and Seth Rothman (Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press), 199-200.
