Prompt:

Chapter Article: https://open.lib.umn.edu/communication/chapter/11-3-persuasive-reasoning-and-fallacies/

Of the ten fallacies discussed in the chapter, which do you think is the most unethical and why? Describe a time you have been guilty of using a fallacy in a discussion or when someone has used one with you.

Please compose these after you have covered the text and lectures for that week, otherwise, you’re assessing without the proper framework. It’s expected that you tie-in the text and lecture to discussion rather than just providing your opinion and/or example(s).

The purpose of these is to 1) provide additional writing practice (as this is a Writing Experience course), 2) allows for a more in-depth and confidential reflection, and 3) may help prepare you for the week’s discussion post as the prompts may be similar.

Also unlike the discussion posts, there is no wiggle room for missing a submission as there are only five. As such, please be certain to keep good tabs on the due dates.

How this will be graded?

While we are more interested in the process of self-reflection, we are only able to grade the product provided by the student. The grading for these will be based on the rubric below. Again, meeting the criteria is average. Exceeding the criteria and/or working toward improved results are worthy of full points.

Criteria #1: is based on Hatton and Smith (1985), who described four progressive levels of reflection, with each increased level indicating more/better reflective processes (you want to get to number 4)

Descriptive: This is not reflection, but simply describes events that occurred with no attempt to describe ‘why.’

Descriptive Reflection: Description includes reasons, but simply reports reasons.

Dialogic Reflection: Reflection as a personal dialogue involving questioning things, considering alternatives, etc. Examples include “I wonder…, what if…, perhaps…” types of statements.

Critical Reflection: Takes into account context in which events occur, questions assumptions, considers alternatives, thinks about consequences of decisions/actions on others, and engages in reflective skepticism.
