research article critique 6
After reading Chapter 1, you have learned that research is one of several tools that educators use to improve instruction. You have also learned about different research methods and the goal or end-sought for each of these methods. This assignment requires you to use the online databases available through Prince George’s Community College’s library to access and evaluate a peer-reviewed article that incorporates the experimental method of research.
As you are already aware, experimental research is considered the most rigorous form of research. You also are aware that conducting a true experiment in the classroom is very difficult because we can not reassign students to classrooms. Therefore, educators employ a quasi-experimental design when the goal of their research is establishing cause and effect.
You are asked to find a peer-reviewed research article that uses the experimental method to demonstrate the effect of an educational intervention for improving instruction. The intervention could potentially be used to address a learning challenge or problem, or as a mechanism for making the classroom inclusive. In other words, the educational intervention could be designed to help students with learning disabilities or students who are linguistic minorities. You are asked to consider the full range of learning challenges, including educational interventions that enhance the performance of students who are intellectually gifted.
After locating an article that meets the above criteria, please address the following points:
- Summarize the major findings of the study.
- Identify the independent and dependent variables in the study.
- Describe the educational intervention used in the study in terms of its strengths. Is it a best practice?
- Discuss the limitations of the study.
- Suggest strategies for improving the current study or future studies.
- Discuss the implications of the study for teaching.
