Write a thoughtful answer to the two questions I pose. Make sure to address all parts of the question. 2 paragraphs or at least 10 sentences for each question is a safe barometer.

1. Three Feudalism documents (Galbert of Bruges, Fulbert of Chartres, Bishop Adalbero): What is vassalage and what is it’s purpose? How is this system justified and maintained and what are the particular roles of the three “orders” in the society of the High Middle Ages? Do you see any connection between the legal and ritual obligations you read about in these documents and customs and/or practices from earlier periods like Classical Antiquity or the Early Middle Ages?

2. Luitprand of Cremona: How does (Holy Roman Emperor) Otto I’s envoy to Constantinople describe the Byzantine court? What are his motivations both for going and for writing about the experience? How does he define and/or contest the term Roman–the term both is patron and the Roman Emperor he’s visiting claim?
